MG MGF Technical - Wizz gurgle jesus!

Good morning everybody, got a nasty shock this morning!
After returning from Luton yesterday I put the car in the garage overnight
this morning I went out, started the car and went to lock up the house.
Returning to the garage and the car was silent, odd I thought, got in and all the ignition lights were on, oh dear I thought, so I turned the engine over to the point where it usually catches, but it spluttered slightly and died, but the fuel pump went whirr, like it was priming and there was a gurgle from the engine. Jesus I thought gurgle= BAD NEWS so I switched off the engine sharpish, then I began to smell petrol. Jesus I thought, I'm in a tightly confined garage!
Pushing the car out of the garage and opening the engine bay I get lots of petrol smell, it's all around the fuel filter- cue watering can + lots of water.
Further inspection revels that the rubber pipe (from pump?) has come free from the fuel filter and it has some type of push fit connector, I push it on, it doesn't come off, I start car, it doesn't leak. I unwrap fire extinguser (chrismas present) and put it on passanger seat and drive gingerly to work.
At work I have a closer look and the pipe has some sort of plastic lock clip which is not pushed home, nor will it push home without popping back out. How difficult is it to replace this hose? prices? anyone else get anything simmiler without getting a ball of flame?

will as you say this is a quick release connection, I doubt if you will be able to buy the sealing ring as a separate part . It seems odd that this has suddenly 'let go'. Have you had a service and had the fuel filter replaced ? Maybe it was not fully home? Investigate further as high pressure fuel sprying onto the starter etc wil create a nice inferno. Do not drive it.

I got very confused with these connectors when I first saw them as well. The plastic "colar" is not a lock clip. You push that and pull to disconnect the hose. You push the hose on the pipe into the connector until you hear a click to connect it. I can't understand how it came of by itself though.

Cheers Mike, my thoughts ;-), I guess it would be safer to just buy a new hose, where is the other end?

the hose seems to have a bit of play up and down the pipe, but doesn't seem to have leaked any more, so I guess some part of the mech has broken 8-!
Had a 72k service quite a few months ago, and changed HT leads about a month ago, but haven't been in the bay at all since then, than god it didn't happen last night when the engine was hot!

Was excess pressure in the fuel line responsible for the fuel pipe comming off the filter? Could the filter be partially blocked and be responsible? Might be worth replacing.

OK have had a further look.
The Fuel filter gets replaced at 60k, so is about a year old (should be OK) B&G did a HG replacement as part of the 72k service so would have undone this. the service was a few k miles ago, about 1month ago I changed the leads, have not been in the bay since then.
The hose goes from the filter to the head changing midway into a metal pipe- so would be an ar*e to change and prob expensive.
The hose clips on like spros says and feels secure enough not to come free, but it can move up and down slightly on the metal pipe it locks to, cannot see any traces of escapeing fuel.

So the game plan is to wrap the joint in tissue paper and seal with tape, leave for a while and revisit to check all is leak free.

This type of connector are usually pretty reliable and take quite a pressure before failing. It sounds as though it was never on properly. If there is a fault it will be in the connector. You could cut about 6mm off the pipe if you can and this will remove any damage to the pipe, push the pipe firmly home and just give a little tug to make sure it's fully home, if so it won't come out unles you press down the little collar which is how they are released.
