MG MGF Technical - Wobbly gear lever
The undistinct gear shift seems to be a caracteristic of the MGF. Are there any advice how to make it better. In the radcal end, getting the maike satur slick shift is one solution, but what are the options? cheers Oskar |

Oskar Sadly, the slick shift is the ONLY way to go. You can replace the cables, tighten all joints, adjust cables correctly but you are still stuck with a shift 'as designed'. I was as MS yesteday having hoops fitted and foolishly didn't have a slick shift while I was there .... next time |

I'll confirm that too. Had A MS SSK for several years now - much much better that the standard wobble handle :-) |

Dang, How is the slick shift job as a DIY? I noticed that the ball joints at the gear box has some play, and the rubber covers are rotten. Is the only cure to replace the whole cables? cheers Oskar |

Yes, replace them with ball (rose) joints. This what both Mike and Techspeed do for their quick shift kits. Regarding feel, believe me, you can get a sizeable proportion of that improved feel just by cutting the lever down an inch... which is exactly what MGR did for the later models of MGF and then TF... |

Oskar, Have a look at http://www.apttony.co.uk/Servicing/FittingSSK.html Bear in mind that this is for the MKII SSK, but I doubt if there is much difference. |

I cut the threaded section from the top of my '96 F gear lever and noticed a good improvement in feel - reduced lever end movement. Had to fit a MOMO type gear knob afterwards. But, the real fix is slikshift. |
