MG TD TF 1500 - 1953 Mk 2 Value

Hi! I'm new to this part of the board, but not to MG's, having a '77B and a '60A. I bought a 1953 TD Mk2 today (actually, I put a deposit on it), and would like some input on it's value. It has no rust, the wood looked good, as well as the floors. It runs, but will need a complete restoration (brakes, carbs, shocks, hoses, fuels pumps (2), belt, etc.)There is a small bondo patch in one fender, but it has held well, and one running board has a twist in it. Doors shut fine. Lots of surface rust and crud underneath, but it looks like it can all be wire brushed off, rust converted and painted. Interior, though not original, is decent. Instruments will need some cosmetic work, but oil pressure looked good (40 psi).A little surface rust in the engine compartment, but the entire car will need repainting. XPAG engine appears to be from an earlier car. Has Andrex shocks in rear, Armstrongs in front. Has heater, radio, wood steering wheel. Needs top to air cleaner. All chrome is shot; windscreen has small corner crack. Car is LHD. Lights work, horns don't.

Any estimates on what it's worth, in US $? Thanks!

Ira,
Hard to say just from that info....you also have to take into account that "bonding" thing! I paid too much and have turned down twice what my TF would be worth to any sane person! See if this helps at all :

At least it's a starting point. Durring the first 2 hours I owned mine there was some guy following me down the highway blowing his horn at me...when I stopped I could have made a quick $5k ....but I had allready "bonded" with her...just couldn't do it.

Ira,

What makes you say that the TD is a Mk 2? It can make a difference in its value. If the engine is not a Mk 2 engine, it will make a definite difference, at least to a knowledgable buyer.

Bud,

The VIN is TDC21548x. Body type is 22381. Body # is 20896/94990 It has dual fuel pumps. There is a flange-like bump in the middle of each front fender where they meet the frame. It has andrex shocks as well as Armstrongs (?. The engine is XPAG 4366, but I think from an earlier model. I also think the carbs are wrong.

I don't have Clausager's T book yet. Can anyone look this up?

Ira,
Scroll down on this page my friend ...Chris C. has a link there under "Thread: Date of Manufacture"!

Thanks! I found the production figures in the link. According to these data, the car was manufactured in October of 1952. This would make it a 1953 model (model year changeover usually occured in mid-year).

Thanks!

Ira,
Don't forget that with our "lil" friends back then...the "year" got assigned to the title work when the car was "sold"...not when it was actually made!

Ira, your car is worth what you paid for it--- or you would not have paid it. May be worth more, but by the time you find out how much, you will spent another few thousand and the parameters will have changed. And like Sheward (and myself) you will probably wind up not caring because you like the car too much to sell it.. It is much like deciding the value of one of your children. Regards.,Dave.

I paid $6,000. I figure it will need about that much to restore.

Hi Ira,

The engine is from an early TD I would think. 1-1/4 inch carbies are standard on all TDs except the mark 2s which have 1-1/2 inch carbies and manifold. Also the grill bars should be chrome plated not painted as far as I know.

I think you got a bargain.

Cheers,

Paul.

Thanks for all your input! Car will be delivered tomorrow. I can't wait. The local "T" club, the Delaware Valley MGTs, has a tech session this Saturday! I also saw a '53 TD at a car show last weekend and took rolls of pictures. Paul, the grill bars are indeed chrome plated. I'll keep you all posted. I appreciate your help and advice. I hope to be able to "give back" as I've done on the MGB and
MGA boards.

Best regards,

Ira
