MG TD TF 1500 - A little MG levity

The French policeman stops the car and asks the gentleman if he has been drinking.

With great difficulty, the Englishman admits that he has been drinking all day, that his daughter got married in the morning to a French man, and that he drank champagne and a few bottles of wine at the reception and quite a few glasses of single malt thereafter.

Quite upset, the policeman administers a breathaliser test on him and asks the Englishman if he knows why under French Law, he is being arrested.

The Englishman answers: “No I don't ...
"Do you know that this is a British MG and that my wife is the driver - on the other side???”

True Story:

Years ago, a girl friend and I are sitting in my Riley roadster on the shoulder of a highway outside a race track in Maryland waiting for her brother and his Cooper formula jr. race car as we are going to be his pit crew. There were several other cars waiting also when a Maryland state trooper pulls up behind us, gets out and proceeds to write tickets for illegal parking. I am car #2 and as he walks up to the LH side of the car he is looking down the road at his next victim as he says to my friend “license and registration”. I take out the requested documents and reach over to hand them to him. Still not really paying attention to us he says “not yours, hers, she's the driver”. “No she isn’t, I am driving” says I. He takes off his Ray Bans, looks, gets red in the face and tells us to “take off and don’t park here again”.

Years ago I was pulled over in Stowe, Vermont while driving a TC at night. My then girlfriend was sitting to my left. The cop told her that she needed to get the car off the road immediately, because it had inadequate lights.
Unaware that she was not driving, I began to explain how the car was registered, inspected and all the lights worked, just as they did in 1947.
He then became more perplexed. I think the best story is one where my sister was driving a TC, and I was riding along. The top was up. A friend of mine passed us in the oncoming lane. I stuck my head out and waived to him. The car behind him came to a screeching halt in the middle of the road...

A similar story is that my then ten year old Grandson and I were taking a Summer ride in my RHD TD. At a stop light, the lady in the car next to us hollered, "You should be ashamed of yourself letting a child like that drive your car"!

Unfortunately no, that incident happened almost 50 years and many automobiles ago. I have a cousin in NH who has one in storage waiting for her son to get interested in restoring it.

Thanks for the reply Jim,,, I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I guestioned because Riley is the Marque Of The Year for our British By The Sea Gathering on June 1st,, so far it seems like we will have at least 9 of these illussive cars showing up!!!! Earliest is a '34,latest is a '59,,, My main contact is in New hampshire,,,Bob brought his '52 in 2012

A friend of mine owning a RHD MGB used to get fun (some years ago when we were younger) form driving this car (in Spain) in two modes:

- with me sitting on the left seat reading a large newspaper

- with his fox-terrier standing on the left seat with the front legs on the dashboard.

Backing through the drive through teller at the bank and looking at the puzzled look on the face behind me.
Strange looks at the window as well.

My father who originally bought the Riley did some research at the time and found that only 47 of the roadsters were officially exported to the US so there are probably very few left at this point in time.
