MG TD TF 1500 - After-market fuel tank
My 51 TD is nearing completion of a long restoration process. Every thing, virtually, is original. The fuel tank was removed from the body prior to going to the restorer and I used the three chemical package I bought from Moss. Followed instructions posted on this web site several years ago about using steel shot to roll around inside to break up the gunk accumulated over 50 years. The restorer also cleaned to the best of his ability. I had the fuel pump rebuilt by Dave DuBois in Washington state 2005. Ran well in tests. In the painting-sanding-painting process, apparantly the vibrations caused by the sander has loosened sufficient gunk again. Doesn't look like I will get it clean. Moss wants $1000 for a new tank. Can't afford that. Any ideas for another "clean" tank or other sources of "new" tanks? |

I took mine to the radiator shop for a boil out. Find one that has done them before. Most that have will be able to get the stuff that they line airplane tanks with. LaVerne |

I paid $200 and it took 2 weeks, but a local gas tank specialist got mine cleaned and recoated and it seems fine. He did have to put a new hole in the bottom, which he plugged. He mentioned that these tanks have thick metal and are restorable when other tanks are not. |

the radiator shop idea is a good one. another idea is hemmings motor news has places that redo tanks. i went that route a few years ago on a tank out of my '35 terraplane. it turned out great. i have read good things about products sold by eastwood company for tank restoration/cleaning/sealing. regards, tom |

Will - I actually have 2 options that you might want to consider. I have a collection of about 30 original TD tanks and would be happy to quote you on one. I could also bring you (2) to MG2006 for you to inspect before you buy one. Next, Moyer Tank Restorations is about 10 minutes from my home in Greensburg, PA (see Hemmings) and they do a great job. I would be happy to bring your tank up to them from the show if you like and have them quote you to restore and seal it. I have used them before on my J4 & PA and they really do fine work, 6-8 weeks wait however. Just let me know. Mick Keystone Classic Cars |

Just talked to Michael Beakhouse of SportsCar Metalworks the other day. His new tanks are 245 pounds + about 60 pounds shipping. 305 GBP is about $574US. A lot cheaper that Moss, but takes longer to get. |

William You certainly have been given lots of options here. Just for the record, I also used a radiator shop to boil out my old tank and then they sealed the inside of the tank. Once done I understand that you will have no further problems with the tank and that appears to be true for mine at least. The chemicals that they use to coat the inside are safe for use with unleaded gas as well. This was a viable alternative in my case. Brian |

I would definately go with either restoring your existing tank, or finding another TD tank for restoration. A restoration expert that I trust said that the dimensions on the replacement tanks that Moss sells are off, and it's a real pain to fit them and to get the gaps correct on the tank end panels, fenders, etc. Since the tank is exterior, it need to look right. |

I had the same thing done as Brian from BC... a local radiator shop is set up to chemically clean them (he mentioned he had done T's tanks before and on one had to open the back with two holes...clean and then seal the holes). I haven't had any leaks after having it sealed.....the stuff he used was red! |
