MG TD TF 1500 - Aftermarket fuel pump

Even after owning the car for almost 68 years, I am still distrustful of the Lucas fuel pump. I'm now too old to easily crawl under then back of the TF to replace it, and now want something more reliable.

Can someone recommend a replacement 4½ psi fuel pump for my TF that I can install at my leisure.

FACET do a 1.5-4.0PSI unit, plastic body, I screwed mine to the bottom of the woodwork.

Usually retails in the USA for about $40, slightly more at Spruce Aircraft Supplies.

Can be used on positive or negative ground vehicle.

I have one of these as a back up on both of the MG's and a higher pressure version as the main pump on the TR8. You can find them at most parts houses. I have found them to be pretty reliable. With the plastic body you can use them with either earthing. Just keep the red wire to the positive feed.

Gord, see http://www.ttalk.info/LockePump.htm or http://www.ttalk.info/EmergencyPumpII.htm I'm not sure that you want to listen to the noise of a Facet pump. Bud

Would a 3lb aux pump be too much for the TF with rear-mounted SU? PJ

The standard rear mounted “high” pressure SU pump is rated at a nominal 2.7PSI.

Should be OK, but if you are adding it in series it needs to be able to pass fuel when the SU is operating. I used a Carter “rotary” pump, it didn’t and I damaged an SU.

FACET has check valves, it will pass fuel. I used a 2.5-4.0PSI pump with success, not as noisy as I was led to believe.

If I check on Amazon, there seems to be a good selection of LP pumps. I assume these are all for older, carburetted cars. If I'm not mistaken, today's fuel-injected engines use HP pumps, so I'm not likely to make the wrong choice.

It looks like Facet and Carter have locked-up the $15-$25 market for LP pumps. Is there any preference for reliability?

Gord, are you replacing the pump or adding a backup?

If using a Carter as a backup it would need to go in parallel with the SU. The FACET can go in series.

We've used a Hardi for years as the primary pump, which proved to be 98% reliable, but crapping out 2% of the time at speed is still way too distressing. We have switches under the dash to switch to a Facet clone in a heartbeat. When the air/fuel ratio meter drops to 100% lean, it is time to swap over to the backup/reserve pump. The fake Facet never let us down. I love to listen to the old ticker pumps for feedback on the fuel line, but have decided to go to shelve the Hardi and go with a pair of Facet look-a-likes.

I'd love to do what Jim N has done, but its too much bother at 89, so I'm just going to replace the SU over the axle. The plumbing will be an undertaking for me, as it is.

How can I tell a 'fake' Facet?
