MG TD TF 1500 - Air filter; 20w

The workshop manual for an MGTD specifies 20 weight oil for the air filter. I’ve always found it hard to find that weight of motor oil. There’s several shops that I recently investigated and the Internet. No one seems to be carrying it now.

I wonder where people are getting 20 weight oil. I I wonder if there’s a suitable substitute? And I wonder if the synthetic motor oils would be acceptable for this use or not?

Your suggestions would be welcome.

Milton it's really quite common. Try Googling 20 weight motor oil and you'll be surprised. For instance, 3in1 oil is SAE 20wt oil. Bud

C-2 hydraulic oil is 20wt. 30 wt is fine Motorcycle fork oil is 20wt. I believe the oil for the dampers that Moss sells is also 20wt.

I don't feel that it would matter if you used 30W, which is quite easy to find. I've used 30W as well as 20W-50 in these type of filters in my trucks and tractors.

Steve,

What is your opinion on oil bath filters versus modern paper filters?

Personally, I feel paper filters are a much better design. Far more small stuff seems to get through the oil bath. That said, I don't think they are a bad design. Just not quite as good as paper, and paper doesn't require dealing with a bunch of oil. They work great in extreme conditions like on tractors, where you might get a lot of dirt sucked in. Paper will clog much sooner. Just my thoughts, and others may disagree.

Thank you, Steve.
