MG TD TF 1500 - Air filter decal

Anyone making these?

Tim

Timothy Burchfield

Does not look like the usual ebay subjects are still selling this.

You can make your own with an inkjet printer and this image.

Christopher Couper

Chris, looks like a typo on your line drawing. “ON SIDE” instead of “INSIDE”.

Hah. That's what you get for stealing content.

This reminds me of a story and old undergrad math teacher told us when we got upset because some of the answers in the back of the book to homework questions were wrong. He stated it was that way purposefully in order to catch copyright thieves. Good story even if it might not be true.

Let me see if I can correct the image.
Christopher Couper

How's this?

Kevin McLemore

Kevin: That's pretty good. Did you make it or find a good image?

The only thing a bit odd is the AC's at the top.

If you want me to post that image email a good high resolution one and I will add it the etchings page
Christopher Couper

Chris, the black and white image of the decal on your site isn't the same shape as the original shown there. I overlaid your B/W image over the original and manipulated the image to match the size and curve. Here's the result (colorized). Unfortunately I'll have to do something about the on side vs inside.

Tim

Timothy Burchfield

Ok, how about this?

Tim

Timothy Burchfield

No idea how big the decal was originally. What do you think of this size?

Tim

Haven't changed inside yet.

Timothy Burchfield

We're getting there! I think the "AC" letters in the logo may have been a somewhat trademarked typestyle, hence the look in my decal. However, I'm open to ideas.
Kevin McLemore

I dumped that b&w image. Totally wrong.

Creating a good high resolution master will take some time.

I have no idea how big the decal was. Looked through my pictures and did not see one but have not gone through the books or WSM.
Christopher Couper

Chris, I took an image I had in my files and removed some of the keystoning. I've been collecting such images for years, as I often nave to make my own decals (I've collected very strange makes of cars over the years, where there is usually no real resources). This particular decal is common to several makes.
Kevin McLemore

Here's my version.

David Wardell

David, looks very nice. Mind if I steal it? I see I missed the line under "INSIDE SHELL".

Tim
Timothy Burchfield

Tim, feel free.
The image on here is of course jpg. The original is a vector file which will scale perfectly to whatever size you need (I don’t have a TD), so if you let me have your email address I’ll send it to you.

Found this if it helps-?
Plenty to look at at least

William, thanks. That is where I got the photo in the original post. I've used Chris Couper's site so much I should pay him a retainer. :-)

David, I converted your eps file to a pdf and loaded it into Photoshop Elements. The quality of the graphics is far better than any of the other pictures I've downloaded. This is the jpeg image from your eps file. I resized it to the dimensions shown in the photo earlier in this thread. I think the color is a little closer to the picture on Chris Couper's site. What program did you use to generate the eps file?

Thank you

Tim

Timothy Burchfield

OK. When you all get down making the perfect file please send me the vector source and I will put it on the etchings page.

Great job.

But we still need to figure out the dimensions?
Christopher Couper

Funny how things go round and round and eventually something good comes of it
Good forum (and members) this

Tim, I used Affinity Designer for Mac, the Mac’s Illustrator killer.
It exports in nearly every file format.

David
David Wardell

Thanks David. I'll have to find something comparable for Windows.

Tim
Timothy Burchfield

Has that decal ever been used on T-cars? Bud
Bud Krueger

Bud: It is for the very early cars that don't have the embossed characters on the top.
Christopher Couper

Tim, Affinity do a version for Windows as well -
https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/designer/desktop/

They also do a Photo program as well. Both get good reviews and are broadly comparable in features and capabilities to Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

Thanks, Chris. The oil-soaked one on Lazarus is a used one that I bought from Blair Engle ~1990. It sports an illegible rectangular decal. Bud
Bud Krueger

Bud: Can you take the extreme measurements of yours so we know how to properly scale these drawings? I am not sure I have ever seen one of the original ones in the wild.
Christopher Couper

Chris, do you know how closely the photo on your site represents the true color of the decal? I think it is more green than brown but others had produced copies that are brownish. Can you tell us the source of the photo?

Tim
Timothy Burchfield

Loos like someone is making them.

Chris, here's a shot of top of the filter. The label measures 2.0" wide by 1.25" high. It appears to be blue ink of a black background. I'll follow this with a blowup of the decal. Perhaps someone can do some filtering make out the wording. Large letters 'AC' are in both top corners. Bud

Bud Krueger

Here's an expansion of the label. Bud

Stamping on the can. Bud

Bud Krueger

Other side. Bud

Bud Krueger

Bud: I think that is something different. I suspect this is a service center label perhaps alerting the owner to a service interval.

As I stated these decals were for air cleaners that don't have the embossed text and are completely smooth on top.
Christopher Couper

Bud, I used Photoshop to tweak the color balance and highlight the type that was on the label. You can read a good bit of the label now, I think.

Kevin McLemore

I *think* it says:

AC MADE IN ENGLAND AC
OIL BATH AIR CLEANER
WARNING
BEFORE USING FILL TO OIL LEVEL
FOR
FILLING AND CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS
SEE THE ?CAR? MAKER'S HANDBOOK

(Not sure about that last line... other thoughts?)
Kevin McLemore

Isn't it interesting what has now shown up on eBay?

https://www.ebay.ie/itm/AC-OIL-BATH-AIR-CLEANER-STICKER-DECAL-VINTAGE-CLASSIC-NUFFIELD-342-TRACTOR-/352647652982?hash=item521b702676

Hmmm. Grrr.
Kevin McLemore

Well done, Kevin! Great bit of Shoppin'.

Chris, I was able to buy the air cleaner, complete with manifold, from Blair about 30 years ago. Know zilch of its provenance. It's been absorbing oil fumes since then. May have been blue on white. Bud
Bud Krueger

Except for the lack of the bronze color (not 100% confirmed BTW), it looks good. We need someone to buy one and check it's size.
Christopher Couper

This guy claims this a NOS Air Cleaner. I plan on contacting him if possible to find out more. If it is NOS the dimensions won't be hard to figure out. The decal appears gold to me.

Tim

http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/dodge_rebuild/part28-restoration.htm

Timothy Burchfield

Here's what i received back from the gentleman who did the restoration:

"Yes it was a NOS filter that I purchased off ebay to adapt to the Dodge's engine. It's now fitted to the truck but from memory the decal hasn't survived all that well with having run the engine on numerous occasions, and no doubt having dried out somewhat while sat around for decades before being used. What it was originally designed for I can't quite remember, although Bedford lorry does spring to mind as a possibility."

Tim

Timothy Burchfield

Tim: Great find. Sure wish the picture did not have that box of paint brushes but it will good enough as you say to get some dimensions.

Can you ask what he feels about the background? It's possible it came in both white (that probably yellowed) and a bronze backing too. This one looks white.

Note this sample also has the important "Mickey Mouse" wing nut that is also on the TD.
Christopher Couper

Chris, I'll ask him. He might be willing to get a picture of it today, al be it in worse shape.

Tim
Timothy Burchfield

Here's my decal based on the NOS one pictured above. If you make one be sure and use white backed decal paper not clear. Ask me how I know :-)

Tim

Timothy Burchfield

Looks really professional!
Well done.

Declan Burns

Tim, nice job. Does the top of the filter have a hole in it for the threaded rod and wingnut? It appears to have a convex raised section rather than a concave depression in the centre, but that's obviously just an optical illusion? Cheers
Peter TD 5801
P Hehir

Declan, thank you.

Peter, thanks. It does have the hole in the top. It is identical to the air filter on my 53 TD minus the stamped lettering on top.

Okay now I’m trying to pull the images from this thread but unable to do so.

Bud. I have never seen that decal. Can you send me a pic of the close up of your rectangular decal?

Kevin, can you send your highlighted version.to me as well?

Tim would you be willing to run off and sell me a couple of your efforts ?

Good job Tim.

Bill, I'll send you couple, no charge. Maybe return the favors some day. Send me your mailing address via email.

Bill, that's the best that I can do. Kevin's Photoshop image is the best. Bud
Bud Krueger

Kevin yes to your answer. Could you also send me buds pic as well?. I presume you were able to copy it

Bud, I need your pic sent to me as I can’t seem to copy it directly from this site for some reason.

Tim, use my linked Email email and I will send my info. You may already have it from the “ answer that question wiring diagram game on the other site.
