MG TD TF 1500 - Air filter elements for TF

My car greatly benefitted from having its cloth/wire gauze elements washed and cleaned thoroughly.

I wasn't keen to 'oil' them as MG reccommended thinking they'd probably clog up with dust again pdq.

Has anyone fitted a modern filter element eg from K&N range into the TF's Volkes pancake cannisters?

If so what element did they find to fit?

John,

I greatly recommend oiling the filter elements as described. The fact that the elements will clog up with dirt and dust quickly is exactly why. The oil is meant to trap those particles that would otherwise work their way through the filter and into the engine - this is the whole point of the air filter. Better to clean and oil the filters frequently than to have to rebuild the motor.

I have a TD with the Stellings&Hellings type pancake filters (1 1/4") that has the foam filter requiring cleaning and oiling. I too, found the periodic cleaning a bit of a pain, but also wasn't convinced that these filters were very efficient. Also, the height of the filter element was only about an inch, and thought that a taller element would allow better breathing. Toward that end, I searched high and low for a replaceable, paper element that would fit. I found one from NAPA Auto Parts here in the US. The filter is about 1.4" tall and just fits. The car runs better, and I don't have to clean them, just replace them at about $5 each. Much better.

I know that K&N had a filter that was of the same dimensions, but ran about $25 each. You may want to visit the K&N website (I believe it is www.knfilters.com or something similar, a search for K&N should find it) and submit a request to their technical services department describing the dimensions of the filter you need. They'll get back to you with a part number that should fit.

Good luck.

Larry,

I have just been advised that K&N element E-9013 may do the job
This has a OD of 134mm, ID 97mm and a height of 26mm.
I'll report how I get on once I'v laid my hands on a set.
