MG TD TF 1500 - Air Filter Painting

Well, the heater is complete (talk about baby steps), now its off to piddle with the air filter. Is there any kind of finish on the inside of the air filter walls? Where does the black paint stop on the canister insert? Am I correct in assuming that the exterior of the air filter is semi-gloss black? I guess I should state that filter is out of a TD 12947 and I believe it is original equipment.

As usual, these are rudamentary questions and I thank you for your patience and helpfulness.

Mine was gloss black on the outside...no paint on the inside. Think the paint ended as if the unit was painted all in one piece?

Thanks Gordon for the information. I wasn't sure. My air filter had a laquer color coating that I now believe was just old oil. As soon as I can get to the bead blaster, I will finish cleaning it up and paint it. Now to start a new post on my next mini project - the Horns. Thanks again,

I will be looking at the oil in the filter in the next couple of days...will grab my camera when it is apart...
The only shot I have is before refinsihing .... http://www3.sympatico.ca/gordonblawson/td/td86.jpg

Patrick,

I masked off the area inside the filter including a plastic bag on the filter element openings before I blasted mine. I plan on using semi-gloss. Rustoleum 7777 works perfect for this stuff. I won't be painting the inside, just down about a 3/8 inch or so. I will paint the inside of the filter bowl.

I don't think I would bead blast the air filter even in plastic. Just use paint remover, wire brush and sand paper. It will get clean enough.

I don't think you want to injest bead blast dust into your engine.
