MG TD TF 1500 - Alignment of steering column

Hello.

Browsing once more across the TD-TF workshop manual, I found in section J.5, page J.6, how to align the steering pinion shaft, as follows:

“With the rack in the central position, engage the pinion with the arrow uppermost”

And the next paragraph tells how to provide a basis for the alignment of the steering column, and later the steering wheel:

“Refit the coupling with a coupling bolt in line with the arrow on the shaft. This will ensure that the steering wheel spokes are in the correct position in the car.”

When I re-assembled my steering rack and pinion shaft, I did not notice any visible “arrow” anywhere (really I had not in mind this procedure, and did not search for this mark).

Has anybody seen this arrow? Where exactly should it be?

Jesus - If it is any consolation, I have had the steering assembly on our TD apart several times. I have even wire brushed it down to the metal and repainted it. In all those times I have never seen any arrow (I must admit, I was never looking for one). Perhaps it is like the elusive bright links on the timing chains in the engine. Cheers - Dave

Jesus, Doing a total rebuild on my 54 TF and had the rack disassembled and put back together about a month ago. I didn't really find an arrow but found a line scribed on the shaft just below the splines. One of the bolt holes on the couping flange had what appeared to be a casting flaw on the outside of the housing and the others did not. I guessed that that must be the arrow and aligned it to the scibe mark on the shaft.
Don't know if it's right as I haven't mounted it back to the frame yet. Hope this helps.

My late TD also has a scribe mark on the pinion shaft, just below the hub of the three section coupling. One of the three section's bolt holes is aligned with the mark. The scribe mark is on top when the steering is centered.
