MG TD TF 1500 - Alternative to TF tachometer cable
The inner core has snapped. Real pain as I was in the middle of fitting a Pertonix kit and now can't check the timing advance properly. I got a price from Moss today of ~£32 ! I got thinking that an alternative from another car may be a direct replacement. The cable I have is 48.5 inches or 123.5 cm give or take. I don't think it has to be that long. I think the bend caused by the way the PO had routed the couple of inches excess caused the problem. Any suggestions on a more commonly listed alternative cable ? Dave 1955 TF 1500 PS Thanks Bud Krueger for the info on the pertronix installation |

Here in the US there may still be a few shops that service and repair speedometers-they can replace the inner cable. You may be able to find a do-it-yoursef inner cable kit somewhere as well. Make sure the tach mechanism is free and didn't seize or bind. George |

Get in touch with Speedograph Richfield in the UK for a cable or to fix yourz. Tom |

Hi Dave, if your cable has broken at the end, simply shorten the cable and refit the drive end.I just solder mine. Then twist the outer until it telescopes inside itself to the same length as the inner, there is plenty of length to allow this. Ray Lee TF 2884 |

Thanks guys The cable is snapped about 10 inches down so too short to save Ray. I had a look at Speedograph Richfields site today and they do a new one for £12+shipping and VAT - much more reasonable. I'll order it up tomorrow :-) Dave |

Let us knosw if it is the original-style wound type, or a plastic outer cable-type. Glad we could be of help. Tom |

The £12 +VAT + P&P version has a plastic sheath... the original style one cam out at £32 +VAT + P&P sames as Moss... :-( But... The did agree that if I send them my sheath they would fit a new inner cable. Roughly £14 + the VAT + P&P. Very friendly Let you know how it all works out. Cheers Dave |

The guys at Speedograph Richfield were very helpful. They replaced my inner cable in the original sheath for £10 + £8.50 P&P + VAT. Works great. Tim who I dealt with also is posting me a small container of their secret recipied lub so I can do the speedo cable. Cheers Dave MG TF 1500 |

Use it sparingly! I use less than a teaspoonful for the entire cable. Tom |
