MG TD TF 1500 - Armstrong damper fluid level check
On my list of things to do is to check the fluid levels on the dampers. One of those nitnoid items that I have been putting off. They don't leak and seem to be firm in rebound, but the last time those were serviced was 23 years ago when I got them back from World Wide. I have the fluid (fork oil) if needed. I assume to check them, the car needs to be level and Weight On Wheels. While I think I can access the fronts fairly easily, the rear shocks look to be a challenge to get to let alone top off if needed. I really don't want to remove them, so is there a way to check/refill them in-situ? Also, is my assumption that the car should be level and under load (WOW) when doing that correct? I don't have a lift, so I'm relegated to the garage floor. Jim

Girling or Armstrong? Even after 23 years, unless they are leaking, there should not be any issue with loss of fluid. If there is, I would contact Jeff at WorldWide. As I remember, he guarantees them from leaking for life. If you do find them low, remember that you do need a small air gap at the top |

I agree with Bruce. Unless you’ve noticed leakage from around the shaft I wouldn’t mess with them. If there is leakage then send it/them back to Peter. They do have a lifetime guarantee. You said the rebound is firm which tells me there is sufficient fluid in the reservoirs. Also, unless you have ordered new O rings for the caps I wouldn’t remove the caps until I had them in hand. Chances are they will require replacement once they’ve been disturbed. |

Thanks guys....guess I'll cross these off the list. One less nitnoid to address! Jim |

Peter at Worldwide. Bill got it right. Jeff is the distributor guy. |
