MG TD TF 1500 - Authorative info on TD Mark II

I have TD 19140 that I am selling for a friend. I had it for the past week-end at the Montreal MG Car Club's 60th Anniversary week-end in the Québec Eastern Townships. It is a great runner and beautifull to look at.

However, the car is badged as a Mark II and has the dual fuel pumps. But that's where it stops. So I am far from convinced that it is a legitimate Mark II. Even the engine numbers differ from the production number, and what's on the engine presently in the car.

I've checked all the regular web-sites to try to pin down a few critical data. Perhaps someone here can help me.

What I want to know is:-
a) What should be stamped on the dumb-iron?
b) What should the chassis number on the car plate read?
c) What should the engine number on the car plate read?

I am confused with TD/C, and TD3 and where it should be expected to be displayed.

Gord - First of all, the on-line record is incorrect for this car - don't be sure the existing engine number is wrong. The correct engine is XPAG/TD2/19443 NOT 10443, as the on-line record shows. This is another example of why it is so important to go to the source - since I have a set of the production records right here, I am happy to answer any questions like that.

For a couple of reasons - without seeing the car is difficult, but I do have some ideas - the car is probably NOT a Mark II car. The production records show it as a regular TD, and although the engine should be a TD3 engine, yours is a TD2 engine. All the Mark II go-faster parts were available over-the-counter, and I have seen cars where people added the fuel pumps, the carbs and the shocks, but the car is still not a Mark II.

ALL Mark II cars MUST have the serial number stamped on both the the dumb-iron and the ID plate becginning with "TD/C" (there is plenty of room for a fake "/C" to be added to the ID plate - I've seen it - but I've never seen the dumb iron re-stamped). The engine number will be either "TD" or "TD2" on earlier cars, but must be "TD3" on cars after 17029. On the front side of the lower A-arms there should be welded spacer blocks where Andrex shocks are mounted to a genuine Mark II, but I have a few pairs of them lying around, and they can be added to any car.

If you would care to send me any pictures (off-line, I think) I'll be happy to let you know what I find.

Tom,

This is exactly the information I am looking for, particularly the bit about the correct dumb-iron stamping.

Thanks very much. That pretty well seals it.

I understand from our mutual friend that you will be in the Montreal area in a few weeks. I hope it can be worked out so that we meet. He's depending on me to give you instructions ... stand by.
