MG TD TF 1500 - Banjo Bolt/Float Cover Connection
I had gas coming out the rear carburetor overflow pipe in my TD. It turned out that the float was leaking and I replaced it which solved the problem. I then drove the car around the block about a mile or so and parked it in my driveway while I checked to make sure that I had tightened the fuel lines properly and that no gas was leaking from them. The fuel line connections were fine, but I noticed a slow drip of gas coming from where the connector banjo attaches to the float chamber lid. I tightened the banjo bolt but the drip continued. I took the banjo bolt out and checked the fiber washers and the face of the both the connector banjo and the float chamber lid. The washers were fine and and face of the connector banjo and float chamber lid were smooth and had no sign of cracks. I tightened up the banjo bolt again and started the car. The drip was still there. I decided that while the fiber washers looked fine, perhaps they had deteriorated somehow and order new ones from a parts supplier. When the new washers arrived I installed them and started the car. The drip continued. What am I doing wrong here? This seems like it should be a no-brainer. Thanks, Gene Gilmore |

Gene, It is NOT a no-brainer. It is also a fire hazard! At least one of the suppliers (Moss)sells washers that are too thin. Try Clarke Spares and restoration in Doylestown, PA. he has a kit of fiber and brass washers designed exactly for this problem. It is very reasonably priced and works. I went nut last year trying to solve this problem on my MGA (see MGA archives). The size is the same for the TD. The brass washers go on the outside of the fiber ones. Ira |

I may try Ira's suggestion, as I have always had trouble stopping these from leaking, with all different types/colors of washers. Do check again for a crack, as I eventually found a fine crack in one which would not stop leaking. Just turn the ignition on (which runs the fuel pump) and make sure no leak before running! |

If the fuel is leaking from the overflow pipe then the float chamber jets are suspect. Rgds David Tinker |
