MG TD TF 1500 - battery

Hi,
I need a battery for a 52 TD. What type and brand is recommended?
Thanks,
Herb Strachman

Herb,

I encourage you to learn how to use and to explore the TD-TF archives. You will find the answer to your battery question and many others in the archives. if you need help accessing the archives, please contact me via e-mail and I'll offer some pointers. (I am a fellow resident of Central Massachusetts.)

Good luck.

Like Larry said..lots of options in the archives. IMHO A $250 "tar-top" would look best! If your cheap (like me)....a $49.00 Interstate, a can of black spray paint,(that brite green & white bothered me) and a $1.49 "LUCAS" sticker doesn't "offend the eye" too bad. "Modern Batts" can be smaller and more cranking amperage...that left me some nice room to carry a few old "period tin containers" of "Marrvel Mystery Oil" Hydrolic oil & lead additive that I "re-fill" from the Castrol 20/50 ect plastic cans. It looks kind of neat, keeps them where I need them and leaves the felt in the tool box cleaner! I get a lot of comments on this when me bonnet is open.

Herb,

Just buy any modern 12v battery that fits. Would suggest though that you arrange for the terminals to be towards the front. If they are to the rear they will enourage corrosion of the bulkhead. Look how the small ledge to the top of the battery box on many TDs and TFs has been eaten away by acid just adjacent to the posts.

Reminder that TD a is Pos. Ground when you are looking at the orientation of the terminals.

Some of the Group 35 (I think) batteries have the posts sort of in the middle front to rear. Much shorter and smaller than the original, but vastly more cranking power. Interstate, Die-hard, and others have a free replacement for 18mo. guarantee which is good. Or you could buy a $19 special at your local parts emporium like I did for my brother's Olds (more than the car is worth)! Keep terminal position away from bat. box metal as Jan says.

Duhh ..ok this "sounds stupid"..but look first to see if your car is poss. ground!
Having owned many British cars first time I noticed my TF had been converted to neg. ground was when I purchased new batt! Owned it for over a year before it sunk in that it was no longer poss ground!
Terminals to the front for sure!
