MG TD TF 1500 - Bell Housing & engine mount bolts

Using "the Original MGTD midget" listing of TD Bolt sizes, all (10) bolts connecting the bell housing to block and sump are 8mm x 1.
In putting my geabox etc back on the motor after a while off, I find that the top 4 bolts are 8mm x 1 whilst the lower 6 are larger in diameter.

Also I wish to use the correct bolts to fix the engine and gearbox to the chassis.

Can someone advise the correct size of these bolts?

The 8 X 1 is the right size for all of the bolts. In the past someone must have rethreaded to a larger size because the aluminum threads had been damaged. A 3/8 thread can be installed in most cases. To stay correct you may have to install something like helicoils if the holes are not too big.

This is an area where you want a strong joint. The engine/transmission is mounted on the front of the engine and the rear of the transmission. The joint where the transmission and engine connect takes a lot of stress.

Actually Helicoil or another type of thread insert would be better in this situation if properly installed. Aluminum can't take the torque load that iron will. Notice how low the spark plug torque is for aluminum heads on small engines. With an insert, the bolt, cap screw, is turning AND pulling against iron when it's installed. The insert is just PULLING against the aluminum component it's installed in when the bolt is tightened, so the stress is less.

When Jerry Goguen owned the business, he used to publish a list of all the correct sizes.Hopefully Bob Seymour has kept this going. If no luck let me know and I will see if I can find my old copy for you. Keith

You might also try Roger " Mad Metrics" Furneaux at Roger.46TC@virgin.net or 44 (0) 1566 78411. He specializes in all the nuts and bolts for the XPAG along with a slection of other BSF/ Whitworth nuts and bolts and some he can supply in Stainless Steel. Also has the 8x1.0mm Helicoil in SS. All at reasonable prices. Terry

Helicoils are the way to go for all of the above reasons. Consider that most replacement bolts do not have the same size or shaped head as the original. I had the local machine shop install readily available (and cheap) 8x 1.5 helicoils and used matching bolts. The 1.0 threads are so fine they tend to strip, but the advantage would be all the same. Most important- make sure the bolts are not so long that they hit the ring gear- it makes a really bad noise!
