MG TD TF 1500 - Brake Fluid Dip Stick

In the process of renewing my brake system, judging the right fluid level proved to be difficult. Only an Abington engineer could come up with a measure like "half full or 1/2 inch BELOW the bottom of the filler neck" with the MC placed where it is. Not easy to judge the right level from peeping into the hole with one eye while being cramped into the footwell between the steering wheel and the pedals. Finger test also did not feel right.
I made a dipstick for future use. For my master cylinder, the pin is 1.1 inch long. When dry, put fluid in, when wet, ok.

May come in handy also for the level of the rear axle oil, since one DPO decided to glue the carpet to the floorboards, so I have to access the filler hole from below ;-(

The exact level isn't critical. On most cars where I can't see directly into the reservoir, I usually wrap my finger under the filler neck and if my fingernail is wet then I'm happy with the fluid level. But a dipstick will certainly work just as well and you'll save money on soap!

Good idea. Abingdon!

Like the dip stick I made for the fuel tank on our TD, the same scrap of walnut would work well for the master cylinder. If you can scrounge a piece of walnut to make your dip stick, the walnut will darken when wet. When it dries out, it reverts to it's original color.

If you are not too worried about originality, fit a remote reservoir. It takes away the worries of getting air in the system when bleeding or spilling fluid on the carpet.

I buy the Walnut concept, but I donīt think it will work for frequent measurements like while bleeding.

Ray, where would a remote reservoir go ? Would it not stick out above the floor of the footwell ?

It mounts on to the bulkhead by the fuel pump (TD) alongside the toolbox (TF).
A pipe goes down to the master cylinder either to a modified top cap or to the front plug on M/C with the vent in the cap blocked.

I believe Declan Burns can supply a kit.

It really does make life easy.
