MG TD TF 1500 - Brake Master Cylinder

Im having problems fitting the new seal kit to my TD master cylinder. Its the top hat arrangement thats confusing me, items 10 and 11 in the exploded drawing in the workshop manual. Which way round does the rubber cup valve 11 go into the valve assembly 10. Does it end up with the rubber skirt going in first or last. If the rubber skirt of item 11 goes in first you end up with a rubber top over item 10. if the skirt goes in last you end up with a hollow top to item 10. Also it says in the workshop manual that you should test the working of the master cylinder before fitting to the car. When pushing in the push rod 20, should you get a strong jet of brake fluid exiting the master cylinder, or just a dribble. I would welcome some guidance on this matter.

Hi Jack,
the cup goes in with the skirt out (see Figs M2 & M4
in workshop manual). Check that it is fully home, you can see through the holes in the tophat.Make sure the holes from reservoir to the bore are clear, I use fuse wire.
Fit a bled nipple to the cylinder outlet and run a tube from it to the filler, top up with fluid and pump until all the air is displaced, The check valve (tophat) will retain the fluid until you refit. This will save you from a lot of grief when you bleed the system. It requires quite a strong push to expel the fluid.
Also check you have only one valve washer (part 12) at the base of the bore, I have come across two cyls with an extra one.
