MG TD TF 1500 - Brakes
I have a TD That some one has taken apart. What is a good book to help me get it back to gather? On the Rear brakes what side of axle dose the wheel cyl go on? The backing plates are off the car. Also the lever for hand brake on the wheel cyl point up or point down? Thanks Ralph |

You need the Original T series Book, plus several others, see the link below. Rear cylinder goes to the front of the car, and the lever points down. http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgtd/index.html |

You shoild get "The MG midget (Series TD & Series TF) Workshop Manual". That is the qriginal Factory Workshop Manual. A copy of the "Owners Manual" is a help for routine maintainance, folding the top, storing the side curtains, how to start, etc. Copies of both are available from Moss, Abingdon Spares, BritBooks, etc. This is the essential reference. Then Restoring the TD, Claussingers Book, etc. will be a help. |

Ralph, I have restored a TD and am currently restoring a TF. The most useful book I have found is "The Complete MGTD Restoration Manual" by Horst Schach and published by the New England MG T Register, Ltd. ISBN 0938253-02-6. Good Luck |

Be especially careful mounting the shoes on the front. The standard manual is confusing, and one of the drawings is incorrect, so it is possible to mount them backwards. This results in great stopping in reverse, but pretty scary in forward. The brake cylinder should lift the rear of the shoe into the direction of rotation, with the fixed point forward of the cylinder . . . forward and rear referring to points along the drum in the direction of forward rotation . . . not very clear to describe, but important to figure out.
