MG TD TF 1500 - Brakes locking up: dragging
Still dealing with the turn signals but now I have a bigger issue. With TD-4834. All new brake components with DOT 5. First 25 miles I've had no issues but now with repeated peddle action the brakes begin to drag then bind up nearly so tight the car can't be moved. I have over 1/2" of free peddle before the pushrod hits the MC piston Any suggestions as to what I should be looking for. I would like to debut the car tonight at our club meeting if I can figure this out Thanks Bill Chasser TD-4834 |

OK,, so every piece of the brake system is new,, hoses, cylinders ,EVEN HARD LINES,,flex lines,, No contaminations from any other type of brake fluid,, Steve |

Bill, Has the MS been rebuilt? Are all 4 wheels hanging up and not just one? If all 4 are hanging up, only a guess, but it sounds like the piston in the master cylinder is hanging up, possibly when warmed up or hot and when last time the pedal was pushed it hung up. I can think of anything behind the MS that would do that with new flex lines and all. PJ |

Steve. Yes. The entire system is new. Except I put a kit in the MC zero fluid contamination from mis match of fluids Paul. I will have to drive it and Jack it up to verify whether its one -> four wheels getting tight. The system was put together a year ago while under reconstruction I guess I should pull the MC and blow back through it in the event to puck has gotten stuck. Bill Chasser TD-4834 |

Hi Bill. This some times happens. The Dot 5 swells the rubber cups different. The first rubber cup is covering the relief hole in the master cylinder. You will need to remove .010 from the length of the piston to let it go far enough back in the cylinder to have the cup clear the relief hole. Butch |

We are learning more about your problem,, seems like every thing has been sitting for a year,, I dont understand this >> Except I put a kit in the MC zero fluid contamination from mis match of fluids<< Are you saying that you have a mixture of brake fluids in the system ?? Steve |

Another words the entire system is new. Lines rubber wheel cylinders and a MC overhaul kit. I used DOT 5 exclusively so there is no fluid mismatch and no water absorption in the system. I just bleed the system and going to take it out for a test run. I pumped the brakes with wheels in the air and they are no longer binding. Hopefully this problem is solved. Bill Chasser TD-4834 |

Brakes are working again. Took the car out on the freeway to open her up and shut her down and had her towed in. Sounded like I lost the valve lash. But will investigate that in the morning. I sure hope I can get the bugs worked out of this car soon so I can enjoy drivin ing it as much as working on it. Lol Thanks every one for your assistance. Certainly the best group of mates on the planet. Bill Chasser TD-4834 |

One of our TDs had a rear brake lock up. I took a look and one of the shoes was installed backwards. |

When my rear brakes locked up on the road, I opened the bleed valve on each side to release the pressure at each rear brake and was able to drive home slowly. The rear flexible brake line on the rear axle was the culprit. It looked prefect on the outside but the inside had failed and did not allow the pressure to release. New hoses all around solved the problem. |

I agree with the comment from Butch that the rubber is blocking the relief hole. This happened to my brothers TDC and after careful adjustment to the brake pedal clearance, the brakes appear fine. One thing noticed was the exhaust pipe proximity to the master cylinder generating a lot of heat in that area. Just a thought |

JD that is a problem for us with RHD cars but not LHD. Bill I have rebuilt quite a few MC's and have found that the new seal kits are reluctant to fully return until they have been in use for a bit. Releasing a bleed screw allows you to drive home. Ray TF 2884 |
