Nice looking TF. I like the steering wheel. In the 4th pic on right there is a black thingy hanging about from the roof of the cubby hole Drivers side. What is it anybody know? Also bigger black thingy mounted under the cowl dash overhang to left of cubby hole. Again what is it?

By cubby hole, I assume you mean glovebox. That's the wiper knob. It's the standard arrangement, you turn it to engage, and theres also a switch operated by a cam on the shaft on the driver's side wiper knob shaft. That switch never seems to work.

Horn button. Made of bakelite.

P.S. I don't like the steering wheel, but it's just a matter of taste. I think the Brooklands wheel looks pretty nice on these cars, that wheel just looks too modern for my taste.

Hey Mark,
"That switch never seems to work" ...I found (after a couple of years of frustration) that somewhere along the line mine were "backwards". By this I mean that the manual states you need to "start" the drivers first, then engage the passanger side. Not so on my TF...I have to "start" the passangers first! When I got my car back from engine re-build last year I found they messed up some of my wirring and the wipers came back "haunted". I have some "period" glove box covers with locks on them that make mine a real pain...so my plan now is to add a hidden switch to activate mine, just haven't gotten around to it yet.
Cheers,

P.S. I will still use rain-x as the wippers are somewhat of a joke on these cars! I still insist that one of those patten # on the plate under the bonnet is for "intermitten wipers".
I think I have asked this before,(and never got the answer), but does anybody know what the patten #'s are for?

David
What's a "patten #"?

Just under the "Vin/ID" plate on the TF is a smaller brass plate with a bunch of patten #'s on it. If you follow the link from this post you can see the plate there.
(you can't make out the numbers from that pic...but you can see the plate. I can't recall ever reading anywhere what pattens these corraspond to. Anybody out there know? I would guess one of them is for "rack & pinion steering" as I do believe I read somewhere the "T" was first with that...but I had better put a disclaimer on my knowledge at this point as my ignorance has allready been pointed out once this morning ....by my own mother no less!

The wiper switch is a simple blade and contact arrangement, which is pushed open by a cam on the driver's side wiper shaft. I rebuilt mine when I did the car, but just about every time I use the wipers, I need to reach over the glovebox and 'tickle' the switch. Perhaps because the contact surfaces on the points oxidize over when the switch is only used once every couple of months.

Not that it makes much of a difference, the wipers are almost useless even when working.

On my TF the previous owner must have had problems with the wiper switches. Now they are hooked up to the 'A' knob and with one pull both wipers work (somewhat).

The steering wheel is a stock one... those are aluminum plates that fold around the spokes and are crimped in place... Dave just sent me a set and they are really neat...Believe they were sold at one point by MG Mitten?
Didn't rack and pinion come from one of the larger Morris cars, or was that just the front suspension?

Dave-
As to rack & pinion, nothing pre-war, I guess it is a race between the Y(A) and the early TDs for the 1st MG.
