MG TD TF 1500 - Broken Crankshaft
The crankshaft in my TD evidently broke yesterday (sudden deep knock, plummeting oil pressure, and you can wiggle the crank pulley up and down). I have located the following: new, English made, a NOS BMC crank (both $1800), and crack-tested, welded to standard reground for $900. I do not drive much mileage, but do drive very hard when I do. Any opinions as to which crank would be the best? |

George - Be careful of the NOS. If it is a crank for the very early TDs or TCs, the alloy is not as good as the cranks for the later TDs. You might want to check with Chip Old (fold@bcpl.net) of the Newengland MG T Register as to how to tell what you are getting. Good luck - Dave |

George, I would go with the new "English Made" crankshaft. The quality of the steel was still poor in the later cranks. I sawa broken ceank from a TF 1500 that has inclusions where it broke. The new made cranks use a much better steel alloy (much stronger than OEM) |

crank shaft found to have 1.5" crack after magnaflux -block cylinders.040 over said to be no good. Any knowledge about sleeving cylinders - is there a replacement crank availability market? |

I rebuilt my XPAG last winter and it is .060 oversize and runs fine. Also both Moss and Brown and Gammons offer new cranks for the XPAG. From what I know both are new alloys and should hold up better than the old ones. If mine had been broken, I was going to get one from Moss. |

Has anyone ever had their crank built up then ground down to spec.? Bernie 51 TD |

The crank was broken cleanly between the first main and first rod. No other visible damage, all bearings perfect. Thank you very much to all who responded with advice and available parts. Just built and moved into my new office building, and have a 10th wedding using wedding cars sevenoaks aniversary soon, so we put the pan back on and slid the motor into the corner. Maybe by spring? |
