MG TD TF 1500 - Captive Nuts on RHD Pedal Box Top
Can anyone tell me what is fitted to the two captive nuts on top of the RHD pedal box? Cheers Peter TD 5801 |
P Hehir |
Do you have a pic? The only captive nuts that I can think of are on the side, for the cover plate. Dave H |
Dave Hill |
I think there are another two that hold one end of the outer sleeve of the early clutch cable - but they are not on the top either. Could the top two be for screws to hold the floorboard down. |
R WILSON |
I honestly don't know RW, but I'm keen to find out. CC's site has great info an almost all of the fixings on the TD but the toe board is a bit of an unknown. The captive nuts are shown in this pic Dave with machine screws fitted to both. This comes from Chris T in QLD who I believe owns a TF but the pedal box detail should be the same as on a TD. For some weird reason the image when attached is shown upside down, even though it's correct in my gallery.
I'm really interested also in identifying all of the fixings to the toe board. I'm OK with those on the perimeter and the "D " nuts for the gearbox cover, but everything else is a bit of a mystery including the location and quantity of "D" nuts across the bottom. Mine was made almost 50 years ago using the original as a template but the sheet metal worker then tossed out the original and I was too young and stupid to realize its value. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |
P Hehir |
I thought it was upside-down because you live in Australia - but a good clear photo. |

Settle down Willy.. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |
P Hehir |
Yes, my pedal box has the same fixings, I looked under the car this morning. I didn't use them, and I agree they are most likely to be floor fixings, though not really necessary for that purpose. Dave H |
Dave Hill |
Peter, I think from memory the two(2) captive nuts on top of the Pedal Box are to position/locate the flat rubber piece which goes between the Floorboard (undersurface) and the top of the Pedal Box perimeter. It cushions the Floorboard against the Pedal Box. Cheers Rob Grantham |
Rob Grantham |
Could be. I stapled the rubber to the underside of the plywood floor. Dave H |

Peter -
The top side of the pedal box in my LHD TF is a mirror image of your RHD pedal box. The welded nut toward the rear is used to secure a rubber pad between the floorboard and the pedal box. Moss item #280-430 UK and USA. https://www.moss-europe.co.uk/pad-floorboard-to-pedal-box-280-430.html The floorboard is not secured through this welded nut. The welded nut toward the front is used secure (top to bottom) the floorboard, the gearbox cover, and the rubber pad. Lonnie TF7211 "Mirror image twins" |

OOPS - error in the order of items for the forwarded welded nut. (top to bottom) should be: Gearbox cover, floorboard, rubber pad. Lonnie TF7211 |

Thanks Lonnie and Rob. I thought at least one of them had to involve the floor. I have some other pics in my gallery taken in that area from BBS members, some of whom weren't identified. This one is from Matthew and shows one of the "D" nuts at the bottom of the toe board on his RHD TD and another strange fixing. This seems to be on the underside of the passenger floorboard. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |
P Hehir |
Not sure who owns this LHD TD but it does show the area pretty clearly, including what looks like the top of the odd fixing in Matthew's pic above. The fixing to the left of the rubber boot plate is obviously a "D" nut. Could the partially obscured fixing at the RH rear of the boot plate be the second "D" nut on that side? This could then be the one shown from below in Matthew's pic? Cheers Peter TD 5801 |
P Hehir |
I think this one may belong to Bud and shows the rubber that Lonnie and Rob were referring to. The proximity of the rear screw to the inboard toe board "D" nut is confusing though. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |
P Hehir |
If someone has the knowledge and the skill to identify the fixings in the last pic that would be a huge help. Maybe by using "Paint" or a similar program? Lonnie? Cheers Peter TD 5801 |
P Hehir |
That should read "the second last pic". Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Peter,
I'm glad that you posted the question. One of the D-nuts on the driver's side of my LHD TF toe board is broken off. I didn't know until I looked at my toe board to answer your question. I believe that the odd "fixing" to which you refer is a rectangular T-Nut that secures the gearbox cover to the floorboard. I am attaching two photos in two posts. The first shows my LHD TF floorboards; the second shows my toe board with arrows to the D-nuts. This photo shows rectangular T-nuts in the underside of my LHD TF floorboards. Orientation: The top and bottom of the photo are the "gearbox side" of the floorboards. The center is the "outside" of the floorboards. There should be a hole near the front-inside corner of my driver's floorboard for a screw into a D-nut in the toe board because part of the toe board that would hold a D-nut is broken off. This is probably the screw/D-nut in your photo. (I need to update my floorboard fastener diagram to include this hole and fastener.) The hole at the front-inside of my passenger floorboard and toe board takes a screw and nut because the D-nut is missing from the toe board. This will make more sense when you see the photo of my toe board in the next post. Lonnie TF7211 |

This is a photo of the engine-side of the toe board in my LHD TF, so the driver's side is on the right. Red arrows show the D-nuts. Missing D-nuts are noted. Lonnie TF7211 |

Thanks Lonnie. This confirms 8 "D" nuts in total, four on the bottom flat section of the toe board - two on each side - and four on the semi circle for the gearbox cover. Your pic shows 3 rectangular "T" nuts on the floorboards, two on one and one on the other. Yours appear to be quite new. If so where did you get them? I wonder if there are also supposed to be 3 on the RHD TD? Can anyone confirm?
On re-reading this thread I see I incorrectly described the two nuts on top of the pedal box as captives. They are as you described, welded. All of these nuts and their machine screws are 1/4" BSF. I'll search the archive for details of the original fixings for the pedal rubber plate, probably some sort of slot headed screws on early TD's. On RHD floorboards the sliding cover to access the master cylinder is secured with two circular "T" nuts. These are 2 BA and can be seen in situ on this pic of an original RHD floorboard. I have a clearer idea now of this area though there are still some unanswered toe board questions. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |
P Hehir |
This pic shows a 2 BA machine screw in the original "T" nut. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Screws in my Sept 1954 TF are 1/4 diam X 1 long slotted flat head with BSF threads. Probably same on TDs. I made the floorboards a few years ago from 3/8 marine plywood. I patterned them from the floorboards that were in the car when I bought it in 2013. Possibly original. Lonnie TF7211 |
LM Cook |
The mounting holes in the gearbox cover will tell you how many rectangular T-nuts are used on RHD floorboards. If there is no steel support under the floorboard into which screws through the gearbox cover can the attached, then a T-nut must be inserted into the floorboard. Lonnie TF7211 |
LM Cook |
I re-read your question. The rectangular T-nuts are not new. Sand blasted original ones and painted. Carpet tacks hold them in place. Lonnie TF7211 |
LM Cook |
Peter,
On RHD TFs at least,(and I suspect TDs),there are two(2) rectangular T nuts on the passenger floorboard and one(1) on the driver's side. They are rare. These rectangular T nuts(4) are also, on the TFs centre wood panel in the sidescreen box. Like Lonnie, I used the originals on my floorboards. Kilmartin's Automotive Sheet Metal located in Delacombe, Victoria do an excellent repro. of the firewall footplate for TFs. I m pretty sure they could also do one for the TD. There quality is brilliant. Cheers Rob Grantham |
Rob Grantham |
Make that. "Their quality is brilliant". Cheers Rob Grantham |

Hi Rob, as I now have the 8 "D" nuts for the toe board - four were gifted to me and the other four I recently purchased from FTFU, I'll push on with the one I had made about 50 years ago. Totally agree about Kilmartin as I purchased the passenger footrest from them last year and was really impressed. The 3 rectangular "T" nuts are going to be very hard to find. A Google search revealed nothing so I'll contact all of the usual suspects and see what they come up with. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Only if the decorations are rectangular "T" nuts Willy. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

I haven't found a source for rectangular BSF T-nuts. Here are sources for round BSF T-nuts. I haven't purchased from these suppliers.

B&G have the same hexagonal T nuts - I took in one of the original round ones to them and the hexagonal type were as close as they could find. Don't remember any rectangular shaped ones on the original floorboards of my car, so maybe two types used. Dave H |

I was at Kilmartin 10 days ago, tomorrow mt footrest commences its trip back to the USA. Nice people, doing great work. Peter |

Peter, I think I've found them Google "weld nuts" images I reckon you might find something there Or You could drill out the originals and put nutserts in them willy |

These are pretty close to original, except for thread size. Not as thick as weld nuts. A bag of 250 is enough for over 30 cars - floorboards and side curtain box. 1/4-20 Thread Size 1.25" Flange Length 0.5" Flange Width 0.3125" Barrel Height 0.170 Hole Diameter 0.047" Material Thickness https://www.displayinnovations.com/product/T-NUT250-20-250/T-Nut-14-20-bag-of-250/ Lonnie TF7211 |

Thanks Lonnie. Anyone interested in a group purchase of a bag? 250 is a few more than I need. I'd be happy to take 25. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |
P Hehir |
I have owned about five TFs over time with my first being the only one without the original floorboards. (in fact they were the dreaded 1" thick chipboard variety !) . All the other cars had their original boards and all had both the round and rectangular T nuts evident. Cheers Rob Grantham |
