MG TD TF 1500 - Carb Tune Kit and Jet Center Tool
Hi, Is the carb tuning kit and the jet centering tool worth the investment? Not a lot of money but watching a lot of John Twist from University Motors and haven't seen him use them. The centering jet goes for $35 from Moss and I was thinking it may be pretty easy to have a friend make one on his metal lathe with an aluminum rod. Thanks, Steve |

Steve Best way to centre the jet is drop the needle down in the piston 1/16" or so and screw the mixture adjuster (jet tube) right up and use this combo to centre the jet and tighten it,then correct the position of the neele flush to the piston and screw the jet down a couple of turns and all will be clear and centre or have your friend make one------------! |

I agree with William. That is the way I do it. I tighten the jet nut in several stages, gently tapping the body of the carby in all directions with a small plastic hammer between each stage. My theory is that this "bumps" the jet into best position. Bob |

The problem with the above procedure is that if the needle is slightly resting on one side of the jet as you tighten the jet tube nut and the jet rises (slightly) it can bend the needle. But I'll confess most times I use R L Schapel's method. I do have the Moss centering tool and it is by far the quickest method. I only use other methods when I can't find the tool (which as I get older is quite often). Tim |

I have seen a mechanical tool for synchronizing the two carbs. 2 tubes which are inserted instead the dampers and two angled wires show the synchronous up and down of the carbs. Does anyone know a source? |

I made my own by bending two pieces of wire. Form a U at the bottom that will fit into the oil well in the top of the piston, and bend the top at a right angle. Fit one to each carb and point the top right angle on each towards the other. When the engine is running and the throttle is opened they should rise in unison. Make adjustments to the spindle clamp, etc., if they don't. Much the simplest method and you don't have to remove the air filters. Dave H |

Steve, I have a jet centering tool I bought from Moss. It works well and easy to get the jet centered every time. Problem is I have it in the tool box and seldom need to use it once the jets are centered. As mentioned above, its fairly easy to get the jets centered without the tool especially if the carbs are off of the manifold. If you decide you want one, let me know because I can part with mine. |

Tim that's good. But shipping doubles the price and right now my daughter, who is a flight attendant, does not fly to the US. I'll keep an eye on it. Now I know the brand I found it at MOSS. But it is out of stock. |

Winfried, They are easy to make yourself from 10mm aluminium tubing and paper clips. Turn it down to 9.3mm and you are done. Regards Declan |
