MG TD TF 1500 - Clattering Noise

After owning my TD for almost three years, I've finally started to feel a little more comfortable driving in heavy traffic. The other day I pulled out into traffic and accelerated hard, something I hardly ever do. I heard a clattering noise that sounded like the fan blade hitting something. It did this only in first gear. I assumed that perhaps the mixture was a little lean, and the noise was engine knock. Also, inspection around the fan areas showed no area where it could be hitting anything. I then went to the local mg specialist and he thinks the noise is coming from the clutch plate. Any other guesses?

Does the noise only occur when you press the clutch ? Recently had this prob and found the clutch release bearing was touching the fingers in the pressure plate. There are two causes of this - either the clutch stop is wrongly adjusted or, as in my case, the pressure plate had been surface ground once too often and was too thin.

I took the TD out last night to see if the noise occurred just as the clutch engaged. Wouldn't you know, I couldn't get it to make the noise! I guess I shouldn't complain. I'll keep my ear tuned in, and if I hear it again, I'll post another note to this thread.

Here's the latest. I took the TD out yesterday to top off the fuel tank. I backed out of the drive and started a gentle accereration in first and heard the noise just as the clutch engaged. It only did it that one time yesterday. The noise, again, sounds like metal hitting metal, as if the fan blade is hitting something, but there is no evidence that this is the problem.

Any/all suggestions appreciated.

A shot in the dark, but I had a rattle I could not find, and it turned out to be no oil in one carb dashpot (totally dry), and I guess the piston would rattle or bang up and down.
