MG TD TF 1500 - Converting to negative earth
I wish to convert my TF to negative earth so that I can use an improved rev counter and a Cigar lighter socket to power various items like a mobile phone charger, an electric pump etc, also a lambda sensor to monitor fuel mixture. I know that I will need a neg earth fuel pump but what else do I need to do?? |

I checked the Archives for you and found the subject was covered in Sept 1997. It is pasted here for your reference. Posted 23 September 1997 at 12:48:57 UK time Barc in Cape Breton Mike; To change to negative ground is not a major task. First you change the battery connections. Then you polarize the generator by taking a short length of No 12 or14 wire and'momentarily' connect terminals 'A'and'F' on the voltage regulator. You get a large flash spark and a reversed magnetic field in the generator. Then with the battery ground disconnected, reverse the connections on the ammeter, coil, inspectionn sockets on the dash, and any electronic accessories[radio, CB]. Note, for correct spark direction the SW [or-]connection on the coil is connected to the distributor for a negative ground set up. After all this mount an MGB 'This car wired for negative earth' sign on the firewall next to the voltage regulator. Hope this helps. Safety fast, Barc The only addition I can make is that the negative and positive posts of a battery are differnt diameters and the original helmet type battery cable connectors do not fit well and may have to be replaced with non-standard cables. The fuel pump will operate normally unless it has been electronically modified to use a transistor. |
