MG TD TF 1500 - cracked transmission bell housing
Still taking apart 1954 mgtf in restoration project. I found that the transmission bell housing is cracked. Should I try to get it welded? If not, where would I find a replacement? (I drained the trans fluid. The car sat for 28 years. The oil came out in clumps. Yuck.) |

Ed, How big or long is the crack,,, where is it located on the bell housing? Can you post a picture some where?? SPW |

Ed, Others on this bbs might have better expertise in this area, but I wouldn't want to re-use the bell housing. The engine and transmission are only supported at the front of the engine and the rear of the transmission. The bell housing sees a significant load. I would watch ebay or check other used part sources for a bell housing and maybe a full transmission if you find other broken parts inside. Good luck! Let us know what you find. Evan |

Depends on where the crack is, and the extent of it. A good welder can do wonders on aluminum. George |

Get it TIG welded. I don't think the location of the crack matters. It is aluminum and can be made good as new. |

Call Brian at OConner Classics and see if they have a bell housing - it is easy to install on your gearbox. Good luck |

Welding a crack on aluminium can be tricky, but a good job will be as good as new. Just be sure to get somone who has experience with welding aluminium. A sweat weld will probably work, but again, it takes expertise. If you do decide to buy another bell housing, remember there are three different ones - one for the TC, one for the 7¼" TD, and a third 8" for the late TD/TF. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

"remember there are three different ones - one for the TC, one for the 7¼" TD, and a third 8" for the late TD/TF." Any part #s or indentifing marks? I need to go figure out what it is that I have. |

I have a couple of spare bell-housings. The TF one is here at my house. The other is not. Here is what I can offer: OEM (MOWOG) part numbers: TC - SA2414 TD 7¼" - SA2239/3 late TD/TF 8" - SA2239/4 casting nbr 168022 Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

Ed When my engine decided to destroy itself two years ago, I found the bell housing had a crack about 2/3 of the way back. My local welding shop is good with aluminum and had no problems welding it. If they can get to both sides, the weld will fill just fine. I smoothed the welds and it looks as good as new. So far, no problems. If you do take Gordon up on his offer. I still would not throw it out. |
