MG TD TF 1500 - Cycle fender brackets
I'm building a 52 TD vintage racer and want to use cycle fenders. The fenders are easy to find but the brackets evidently must be home made. Does anyone know of a source?? Cheers, JL |

Nice work Dave, I like the simplicity of design. Would you be willing to sketch them out in more detail? What was your source for fenders? James, The last time I checked with the vintage racing groups (VRG, VDCA, VARAC), cycle fenders had to be fixed to the frame and could not move with the front wheels. Shame really as Dave's look great. Tony |

Yes, very nice work Dave but Tony is correct. I run with the VSCCA and the brackets must be on the frame. I too would like to know the source for your fenders. The best I have found so far are on the Hot Rod sites. Cheers, JL |

James and Tony - the front fenders were actually a continental kit from a mid-30's Packard that was cut in half, then heated and stretched. They were originally built and put on a friend's TC in 1971, then after numerous owners and fender changes, I got hold of them in 2006. Because they're articulated, I can run them with minimal clearance, as you'll see in the picture. Tony, I'll do a sketch of the carriers - it'll be this weekend. If I was doing it again, however, I think I'd go with a real set of cycle fenders - something with a bit more torsional stability. If you search for 'motorcycle fenders' on eBay, you'll get a huge selection of steel fenders with all the work done. Here's one that I just pulled up - I've used these guys for Norton parts, and they're quite reliable. Hello James Here are a couple of shots of the lower brackets I've fabed up to hold MGTC type front wing braces. The TC braces will need a bit of modification, especially at the outer ends, but I like the look, especially with the TC headlight brackets bringing the lights closer in towards the radiator. Haven't finished them as yet, still looking for that perfect set of cycle fenders. Tony is correct about vintage race sanctioning groups not allowing cycle fenders attached to the wheel, unless of course, that style was original to the vehicle. Also have to be the same material as the original body material, in the TD's case, steel. I've seen several types of 'ribbed' cycle fenders on custom motorcycle parts sites but they're not cheep, and not sure if the radius and width would work. Just my opinion but I think a ribbed front finder looks better but I've seen plenty of flat top one as well. Regards Hiram |

Here's a shot from the front where I'M testing bracket and brace fit. Hope to have this sucker vintage rece ready by end of next year. Of course I've said the same thing last year and the year before as well. Oh and I'm re-doing the front splash apron as well but that's however, still a work in progress (lol). Regards Hiram |

Although I would imagine the prices are out of this world you might want to contact Barry Walker: http://www.barrywalker.com/cat.asp?cat=44 I managed to buy my stays many years ago from a fellow in Australia (no longer supplying the parts) and the fenders were custom made by a fellow in Arizona (also no longer making them). Hello Gene, would you happen to have any close up shots of the rear stay at the back of the fender, that's what I have been trying to find a good clear picture of! And what type of bolt or attachment is used to fasten the stay to the fender? Hiram |

Hiram. Here's a shot of the rear stay on a J2 which is similar to what you may need. I would like to use the same rubber mounting method and should be able to find the rubber parts in the UK or make something work from here. Cheers, JL

Hiram, I'll try to get a photo of the rear stay tomorrow but I can say that the bolt is the same as the one James shows in his J2 photo. James, No, those were made for me by Frank Mount in Canada...but I do have a set of Manley's headers for my other car when I finish it. The major difference is that these (Frank's) exit over the frame instead of between the frame and the sump. |

Thanks Gene, any pictures you can post would be great. Is that chrome fitting that attaches fender to bracket similar to a carriage bolt, just with a larger diameter, flatter head? Manley Ford does get around doesn't he, or at least his headers do- I've got a set of his as well. Thanks Hiram |
