MG TD TF 1500 - Dash Chroming

We recently have redone our 53 TD Dash in Birdseye maple. The old chroming around the dash and glove box was made for the original dash. it's a bit beat up and worn, I would like to get new chroming but found the price at Moss extremely expensive for just a few strips of chroming. Is there a cheaper and easier way to replace the old with shinier new?

Thanks for the help.

Richard - I don't know of a less expensive place to get the chrome stips, but you would certainly get a better product if you could find a chrome shop to rechrome them. It would, however be considerably more expensive. Check out Abingdon Spares for prices on the strips. They are at: http://www.abingdonspares.com/index1.htm

Good luck - Dave

David,

Abingdon Spares has moved their website to www.abingdonsparesllc.com if I'm not mistaken. The link you posted doesn't work anymore.

Be careful here. Most of the new chrome may actually be aluminium. I paid almost $100 just to get a original set of the chrome strips. Call your supplier first before purchasing new ones. I have a aluminium one on my car now which I will dump as soon as I can get the originals rechromed.

Have you checked with a chrome shop on redoing what your have or will it not fit because the new dash is not exactly like the original one?

This thread has prompted me to dig out my dash board and trial fit it to the body tub. I find the outer board - one that is covered in leather cloth - sits about 3/16" pround of the scuttle humps. Is this so that I can fit the piping or is something wrong ?

ps If Richard needs to repair his finishing strip I have some spare lengths which he could silver solder in.

Cheers

Thanks Jan,

I will require all new chrome as I have removed the vinyl coverings and the new dash isn't the same as the old one and the chrome doesn't fit, we too have some odds and end pieces. I would like 1 clean chrome piece.

It was suggested to visit www.ntgservices.co.uk and we downloaded the price list, prices seem very reasonable. Has anyone tried their parts? Decent quality?

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I am sure we will have a few more questions.

I have used NTG a lot as they are the only supplier of items unique to a Y type. Most of what I got was good quality and the few pieces that I got that had problems they replaced without hassle. Phone them and try to talk to(insist) Mike Green. Some of the people that answer the phone seem to be a bit vacant. You might also try Craig Seabrook at the Whitworth Shop. You will find him listed on the T-ABC web site Terry

I bought chrome striping from NTG for my TD, as I put the orignal away safely never to be found again.I was very happy with it, as I was with the many items I have purchased from them over the years. Dave

I put on the Moss Chrome beading for the dash and it was brass and chromed and really nice. Did mine about 2 years ago, assume theirs is still brass/chromed. You do need to cut it on the back to put it on the dashboard.

Jan: Yes. Fill with piping.

I HAVE BEEN RESTORING A 1950 MGTD. WHILE I HAD TO HAVE SOME CHROME REDONE, I FOUND I COULD CLEAN OTHER PARTS AND BRING THEM BACK TO A NICE FINISH. I SPRAYED EASY OFF OVEN CLEANER ON PARTS AND CLEANED THEM OFF WITH A VERY MILD ABRASIVE PAD. I WIPED OFF THE RUST AND OVEN CLEANER AND POLISHED THE PIECES. THEY ALL CAME OUT VERY NICELY. OF COURSE YOU SHOULD WEAR PROTECTIVE GLOVES WHEN DOING THE JOB.

Craig Seabrook at the "Whitworth Shop" located in Ohio, besides repairing instruments and building bodies and restoring dash panels etc etc, also used to advertise the Outside Chrome Edge Trim, correct for the TD in chrome plated brass. Not sure if he is still doing this but his craftsmanship was excellent when I used him to rebuild my Lucas ignition and headlamp switch.

This could be one source. The number I have for him is 440-338-5950.
