MG TD TF 1500 - Decision time!

Before I can move forward with painting of the bonnet, front apron, and fenders, I have to decide what color to make the grille....
Since my car is to be two-tone, with wings contrasting to the body, my decision is not going to be based on the traditional method of determining grille color...i.e., based on the interior, or body color....A second color choice might be based on the wing and front apron color.
I set up a photo comparison....
It's hard to tell, but the red is the same as the body color. The dark color is actually almost black, but it's a very dark blue.
Let me know what you think. (I realize it's my car, but it's hard to be objective, when you're this close.)
Thanks
Edward

I like the contrast with the dark color. but in the end it is what u like....
Tom Maine (TD8105)

I like the blue black. Subtle colour & nice contrast.

What about Chrome?

Jim B.
JA Benjamin

Or what about chrome mesh?

I'd suggest taking any photo of your car (or same model) and use Photoshop/Paint/other graphic editing program to re-touch the fenders and grille to the other color (or chrome) and see what the "final" overall look would be. Or get someone to do it for you.
Sometimes the "big" picture could sway you over just a look of the grille itself.
Just my 2 cents.

I had thought about chrome, but discarded the idea, since the shell is chrome, as are the headlight rims, fender mirrors, parking lights, badge bar, bumper...etc...
Just thought it would be too much....
Keep the thoughts coming though...maybe will help my "creative juices".
Thanks

I like the red. Of course you could checker paint with the two colors. That would be interesting.

Suggest you Google "MG TD" and then click "images". There are hundreds of shots of different TDs for you to compare.

Including our old friend ........ :-)

There should be some sort of a warning before posting a picture of "our old friend" ,,,, something like the warning posted on the TV when the program is going to show "Grapic images that might be dsturbing to some viewiers" YIKES!!!!!

LOL...If you haven't noticed "our old friend" is for sale on ebay again.

Personally like a matte black with the red and chrome. But then-opinions are like bellybuttons. Dan

Regarding the finish on the color boards...
No clearcoat was used, just the color on a piece of cardboard...Neither would be flat....
The overall effect is this image (stolen, I admit), but my interior is red, and my top/1/2 tonneau , is tan.

With dark fenders the dark grille looks better to these eyes.

Agree with Bobby...but probably only until I see the other alternative.

Edward,

One of my previous TD's was Autumn Red (Burgandy) with Black Wings and the grill slates were Black and the car looked great.

Good luck.

Cheers, David.....

Red body, dark fenders, tan radiator slats.

This was a friend's car and really looked sharp but I'd never noticed the tan slats until I just now went back and looked at it.
Gene Gillam

That does look nice ...is the hood tan like the tonneau? If yes ...might be a good way to tie it all together.
David Sheward

If you are going with stock silver wheels, silver grill bars are pretty neutral.

John Quilter (TD8986)

I see the point about the tan grille, but it doesn't have the "punch" that I'm wanting.....
I am leaning toward the blue-black color...Since the car had a red grille (car was primrose), when I got it, and I really did not like it, so I painted the grille the color of the body....I drove it that way last year....
I have questioned friends and relatives, as well, and most favor the blue-black.
I will be making a final decision this weekend, since I need the shell in place to fit the bonnet.
I'll post a picture, when the shell and grille are installed.
Thanks all.

Gene, on that red/black car with the tan grille it's hard to decide. The red apron is such a contrast to the black fenders that it's distracting. It might look better if the apron were black as well, but who am I to say?
For Edward's car the dark grille color recedes and appears to give the front a bit more depth.

To bring this thread up to date, I went ahead and painted the new grille to match the not-yet-painted fenders and front apron....
This is a bc/cc color, and it has blue overtones, but appears black, except in bright light....
You can see a blue reflection in the shell, (if you look closely), caused by the camera flash.
The color idea came from an Audi Q7, but not metallic, of course....

Ed, the best (and the worst) thing about paint is it ain't forever. If you don't like it when the bonnet and fenders are installed it can always be changed.

It does look good now though.
Gene Gillam

Edward it looks great. Beautiful color. The yellow color in the backround looks good too; yikes!

Oh, that ole thing! (LOL)

For my $0.02, LSU 913 is one of the nicest looking TDs that I've ever seen.
