MG TD TF 1500 - Dipping rear view mirror
I remember seeing advertisements in 50s magazines for aftermarket or accessory rear view mirrors with a day/night switch. These were described as having the same D shaped mounting stud to attach to the base. Does anyone know where one of these original mirrors, or a suitable equivolent can be found? Lou |

Lou, Ever use a dipping mirror in a convertible? Especially in the city at night, you get a lot of nice views of streetlights and building roofs. I would save my money, but that's not what you asked! Sorry I don't have a better answer... but you could go to a glass house and get a dipping piece of glass, and dip it by hand. The mirrors are easy to disassemble. warmly, dave |

As I recall, one of the differences between a TF 1500 and 1250, was that the TF 1500 had the dipping mirror. It may be hard to find, and repros do not have that feature. You may try to find one. Anyone else out there ever hear or read this or have first hand knowledge - I don't think I am dreaming it. Keith Murphy |

Dave - - I hadn't given much thought to overhead streetlights and such, but I certainly have had undimmed headlights in my eyes, even moreso since the increased number of tall SUVs seem to be at the perfect height to halogenize my retinas. I can't help but think the trade off would be worth it. Good thought tho. Thx - Lou |

Keith -- I bought my first TF1500 from the original owner in 1958. It definetly did not have a dipping mirror. The mirror was the same as on a TD. Cheers, Bob |

Mirrors dip down and up... just have it dipping down and there will be no reflection of streetlights... |

A piece of non-glare, smoked glass to hang over the mirror helps tame the 5 megacandle power headlights of today's cars. Until you come up with something better, sust twist the mirror down to the point that the headlights don't shine in your eyes, but by dipping your head, you can see what is behind you. Dave B. - In addition to street lights and building roofs, if you are in a rural area, you also get starlight and the moon. One gets used to it though and can soon distinguish between celestial lights and those of following vehicles, and iti s much better than blaxing headlights in the mirror. Cheers - Dave |

Yeah Dave D, I had a dipping mirror in my TD for 20 years... from a Plymouth Fury I think... (the extra width was nice too). Since I'm in the process of rebuilding my original mirror, I am debating with myself the merits of dip vs non-dip. So far non-dip is winning! That non glare smoked glass stuff is also available as a static cling material, works well on mirrors as well. warmly, dave |
