MG TD TF 1500 - dismantling shock absorbers
Does anyone know how to dismantle the front and rear shock absorbers for a late TD. Is there any literature on this matter. If the guys at Apple Hidraulics can do it then its possible !1 Thanks, |

jose, it certainly is possible, but here in the states peter at worldwide auto parts in madison, wisconsin does such a good job...quick turn around, guaranteed work and reasonable pricing it is more economical to have peter do them. sincerely, tom |

Jose, It is not difficult to dissmantle the shocks for seal repair assumint you have armstrong shocks. For front shocks remove the arm with the pinch bolt not the arm that is pressed on with splines. Then mark the position of the inside piston arangement so you can assemble the unit back to the origional position. You will have to press out the shaft to reveal the seals. You will notice that there are two different size seals to fit the shaft. Do not remove any of the internal parts! These have pistons with rings that require special tools to install. Origional shocks have a metal shield to protect the seals and these will have to be removed by prying them out and you will not be able to reuse them as they will be bent. New double lip seals can be installed with a little silicone type sealant and reassembled. This is provided that shaft is not scored and has a good sealing surface. If not you will have to install a speedy sleeve to create a new sealing surface. On the rear shock you will have to remove the shaft shield on the opposite end of the arm in order to press out the shaft. There is only one seal in the rear shocks if memory serves. New seals are about $4 each in the states. Worldwide Auto does do very good work. Hope this helps and have a good day! John |
