MG TD TF 1500 - distributor position/#1

What is the correct position for a early TD distributor, [in relation to the block]? Also where is #1 plug wire on the cap? How much can the plug gap be increased when using a pertronix breakerless ign. & the original coil Thanks, Len
Len Fanelli

Len - The distributors were originally installed such that the terminal with the wire to the coil aimed at about 7 to 8 o'clock, right where it will be fouled by the tach drive gear box if it swings toward the block (this causing the engine to stop running and the driver/mechanic scratching his head). The Number 1 wire will be the one that the rotor points to when the timing mark on the crankshaft is lined up with the pointer on the timing chain cover and #1 & #2 valves are completely closed. This position can vary depending on where the drive gear meshes with the camshaft gear. The main thing to carry out is to make sure that the other wires are hooked up such that the firing order is 1, 3, 4, 2 and proceeds clockwise around the distributor. The final answer is no, using the Pertronix breakerless ign. does not increase the voltage to the plugs. You would need a sports coil to do that. Good luck - Dave
