MG TD TF 1500 - Do I have the wrong carbs?
The 52 TD (TD16175) I am putting back together has some SU carbs that don't look correct. The carbs have a vent hole in the air cleaner flange (see photo)that I haven't seen in other pictures for TDs. The markings (see picture #2) on the bodies are the same - "PDC", "AUC6060D" and hand scratched under that "6062". I want to convert from the pancake filters that were on the car when I got it to the original style oil bath arrangement. The "snorkel" I have acquired (see picture #3) does not have provisions for the vent holes in the carbs. I don't know what I have here or what I can do to make it all work. Any insight will be appreciated. |

Check 'Carb Identification' in the archives. Bud |

Check with http://sucarb.co.uk/ Ed |

Ed, 6060 doesn't show up in there. Nor is it identified in any of the SU sources that I've found. It's just a casting number. Bud |

Look like carbs from an early Datsun. ??? |

Carbs not correct for TD. Used on various Brit small CC engines - Morris, Austin, etc. Correct diameter and could be used - but vent port must be open. |

If the car ran with those carbies & the pancake filters there should be no problem with the snorkel, (though the oil bath is less efficient that the pancakes, which is why they were almost always removed by the original owners), especially those who were looking for better performance. The vent hole would be covered by the snorkel. The numbers on my 1 1/4" carbies are AUC 6070 & AUC 6080 & are probably not original but she ran OK with them fitted. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

I should have added that mine had pancakes when I bought it. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

I have an identical set from an early ZA Magnette. They are H2 but with 'later' vent holes as with the H4 fitted to MGA's(?) |

Peter, your information is in the archive thread that I mentioned above. Bud |

check if they are 1 1/2" carbs - could be off TDC that were fitted with twin fuel pumps and larger carbs that were unique to that model although the TF carbs are identical. If they are 1 1/2" your snorkel may be 1 1/4". Again the TDC had a larger dia snorkel and larger oil bath. Put this response as I notice TDC is stamped on picture 2 |

JD I think you'll find that lettering reads PDC. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Blocking the vent hole will stop proper piston operation. All TD carbs lacked the vent holes - TDC or not. Could modify the snorkel to work with these if you wish to use original setup. Kinda tough to find complete originals these days. Dan |

Okay. It is clear that my carbs were not originally for a TD. They apparently worked ok on the TD with the pancake filters which had provision for the vent holes. It doesn't look like they will work with the snorkel I have. So I will try to find the correct SUs and will try to sell the ones I have. It would help if I knew the correct application. Maybe an early Sprite or something similar? |

BM, I have a photocopy of about 3 or 4 pages of SU detail that probably came from the Burlen book. It lists all the cars that SU's were fitted to & their AUC carby numbers. That will answer your question. Trouble is I've put it in a "safe place" along with a whole bunch of other really valuable stuff. I suppose you can guess the rest.. I tried the Burlen site but the info you need doesn't seem to be available on the net. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

This link should provide sufficient information to resolve your issues: https://issuu.com/theshadybower/docs/su_reference_catalogue_16_2012 It will allow you to open a pdf document. |
