MG TD TF 1500 - Do I paint drive shaft?
Restoring 54 mgtf. Got all the oil and grime off the drive shaft. Do I paint it before I reinstall it? |
Ed Eastman |
You can paint it matte black, however, it will get dirty and oil coverd pretty quick. |

Good time to replace the u-joints and get it balanced as well. The yokes should line up when reinstalled. The u-joints are sold at any auto store, just ask for a set for an MGB... they were the same from the TC (or before?) on. A clutch and u-joint business can balance it for you. warmly, dave |

I painted my driveshaft with gloss black. Being slick, the accumulated oil wipes right off. |

Some may think I am out of line, however, I think we are getting a bit anal here. If it was not chromed, nickled, or otherwise coated, it was painted. If you want gloss, do gloss. If you want flat, do flat. Drive the bloody thing and enjoy it. Who gives a damn about the rest. Safety Fast Paul |

Yes Paul, you are out of line. Ed got the oil and grime off his drive shaft. When I did that, it pretty much took the remaining paint off as well. Left unprotected it will rust. No one told him what to use, they talked about what they used, and why. Some folks mentioned installation ideas. Most of the people who post here do drive their cars regularly, or are progressing to the point where they can drive their cars again. It may seem obvious to you, but to Ed, evidently, he felt he wanted to ask the question. Someone here will always answer almost any question. Lighten up, already. warmly, dave |

My apologies. Safety Fast Paul |

Me too... satin black should dull down a bit after use....! |
