MG TD TF 1500 - door threshold plates
Restoring 1954 mgtf. Moss Motors catalogue shows a chrome threshold plate set etched with "The MG Car Company Ltd". Was this on the car originally or was it an aftermarket product? Mine has burred aluminum threshold plates with nothing printed on them. Ed Eastman |

Ed - Your's is original. Cheers - Dave |

Earlier cars had the lettered door plates. Dave is correct that the TD didn't. warmly, dave |

They do look sharp however. You can turn them over for the original look. George |

Or you can make them. (Reactivated thread). I used some 100 mm natural aluminium & some templates from an original TF up in Qld tweaked slightly to fit my TD perfectly. I decided to sandwich the aluminium between two sheets of 9 mm ply for rigidity & screw it together, avoiding the thresholds of course. Pretty simple to then jigsaw them out & finish off with a file. See pics. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

I put the new ones on the TF with the letters showing and don't like them! Had I have known this, I would have put them on up side down. They look gaudy, don't like them at all! They will be replaced. PJ |

I found these nice turned plates on ebay a few years ago. I like how they look. Tom '54 TF |

The stuff I used George is obviously metric. The imperial thickness is .065". If you decide to remake them a 2.4 m length x 100 mm in natural aluminium cost me just $9. This makes four pairs of thresholds. I used 2 thicknesses of aluminium in the jig above so I was able to cut 2 pairs at the same time. A steel wool soap pad removes light scratches & gives it a nice shine. I'm really stoked with the result! The correct screws have also arrived from Doug at FTFU. I don't have a lathe so I'm not able to knock up one of Jim B's whiz bang countersink tools. I do have the patience though to mess about with some scrap until I get the desired result. I'll post another pic or two when they're finished. This is one Hehir that is more than happy to move at the pace of a tortoise! Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Peter: I am missing the way you cut these out of the sheets |
Christopher Couper |
Just with a jigsaw Chris using a metal blade. I cut along the long internal pencil lines first, then the externals. Once a screw has been passed I used small squeeze clamps to ensure the sandwich stays together. Final cuts are the ends. Pretty straightforward process really. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Somehow I envisioned a fancy metal cutting router :-) |

Peter; If you want I can drop the piloted rod in the mail. It does not weigh much. I am sure you can drill and countersink a hole in aluminum to match. No need to return. Jim B. |

That would be great Jim. There are 3 guys here who also want to have a go & have contacted me about how to go about making them, so your bespoke 2 part tool may very well end up doing the rounds. I thought about a router Chris but research on the net suggests the jigsaw is the best & safest method. Dressing up the edge with a file produces a nice clean finish. Jim has the solution to the only difficult bit. Many thanks JB. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Peter: I want to be sure I have your correct mailing address. My emails from your last contact have been corrupted. Contact me at mgtd51-at-verizon.net Jim B. |

Hello Jim. The tool arrived in the mail today & it is indeed a lovely thing. Thank you for your help. It's very much appreciated. When I'm done with it I'll send it down to Woollongong, up to the Blue Mountains & then across to Western Australia. If anyone else here in Oz has need of it please email me at pjbm at bigpond dot com. Once finished with down under I'm happy to send it to wherever it's needed. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |
