MG TD TF 1500 - dynamo numbers
I was told that the dynamo on my TF is not original which can be spotted because it doesn't have the band around the end. The workshop manual says the early TD/TFs used 22257A, and the later ones used 22265B. There are two dynamos being offered in the latest Sacred Octogon issue - one is a 22744 and the other is a 22714. Does anyone have any ideas on the differences among all these numbers? Or a good source that might show what's what? Thanks, Terry |

Terry - Find a auto electric shop in your area that does Lucas authorized repairs. They may have a listing of applications. Good luck - Dave |

Terry, The numbers you quote for the TF are the same that appear in the Lucas 1945-60 Master Catalog as original for early and late Tf and both have cover bands listed in the parts breakdown. The other two generator part #s you listed do not appear in the catalog indicating that they are post 1960. They might be early 60s midget or MGB but I don't have listings for that period. Frank |

Terry - I did a bit more research into the dynamos and find that the important number is the CV39PV or CV39PV2 which indicates that they are a 17 amp or 19 amp dynamo respectively. The dynamo on my TD is a CV39PV2 with the second number being 22685D (Manufactured in 4/56) and it too has no band around the end. I have another dynamo that is a C39PV2 with the number 22265B (manufactured in 8/55) and it has the band around the end. The only thing the band does for the dynamo is make access for servicing the brushes somewhat easier (but it is not a real big deal to replace brushes without the band being there). The important thing is that they have the proper armature and end plate to accept the tach drive gear box, you can always take a band off of an old dynamo and put it on hte one you have without the band if you are concerned about appearance. I would be more concerned about the dynamo being a C39PV2, the armature and end plate and if the dynamo is operating properly, without a lot of wear on the rear bushing (see my posting on the other thread about dynamos today). Good luck - Dave |
