MG TD TF 1500 - Early TD Short Reach Plugs
Sure this has been discussed before, but has anyone found some good modern spark plugs for use with 95 octane unleaded plus additive. My car uses the early short reach plugs. I have read the thread on TF spark plugs, where NGK BP7ES seem to be popular, but these are the later longer reach. |

Henry I think the engines seems to run a bit smoother on NGK plugs. Short reach equivalents of NGK BP6ES are BP6HS. Champion equivalents are L82Y or L82YC. I get my plugs from: http://www.spark-plugs.co.uk/index.htm The different codes are explained on that site. John |

Henry, John As a matter of interest, I fitted a new set of NGK BP6ES plugs in my wifes MGA, and after a short time it started misfiring and running rough. I replaced them with some used N9Ys that I had kicking around and it was OK, the strange thing was that I put the same set of NGKs in one my BGTs and they were as good as gold. I was talking to a fellow MG owner recently about plugs and he said that he had experienced a lot of trouble with NGKs and had heard of other people having trouble with them. Harry |

Harry I have had the opposite experience. One new Champion N5C failed within a day causing misfiring and rough runnig. This happened again a week later. No doubt faulty plugs slip through the QC net but two out of a batch of eight is not good. Also N5C plugs fouled up more quickly when the engine was running a rich. Interestingly after I exchanged N5C's for BP6ES's (without altering any of the settings) the idle RPM rose slightly . John |

I have been running Bosch Platium plugs shortly after installing pertronix ign in my TF1500...(aprx 2000 miles so far)...pulled the plugs out last week to have a look and very impressed with the results. Car is setup a little "rich" but far less fouling than the NGK's I tried right after the pertronix went in. Prior to this setup I was pulling the plugs about every 500 or so miles to clean. I'm an XPEG so WR7CRX long reach is what I have been using not sure what # you would need for the "short reach" but I'm pretty happy with these. Cheers, David 55 TF1500 #7427 |

Harry Sod's law kicked in! Number 1 plug failed yesterday spoiling NGK's record! I think I'll try a set of Bosch Platinum as suggested by David. John |

For the short reach plugs BP6HS, BP6ES are for the longer reach plugs. On the NGK plugs E is 3/4" reach, H is the 1/2" reach |

Many thanks. What is the equivalent number for short reach Bosch Platinum. |

John I haven't tried Bosch plugs. But I ran my own MG repair service in New Zealand for several years and used to buy Champion plugs from the trade suppliers in boxes of 10, and I must admit that there was very often one dud plug in a box. Perhaps the fuel has some bearing on this plug failure?. Harry |
