MG TD TF 1500 - Electronic Flasher Unit

Hey guys,

Anyone familiar with this flasher? This is my third positive ground electronic flasher I have put in my car in the last year or two. I noticed on the back of the flasher it says "Input lead must be fused, Max 20amps". I have never fused the first two units so maybe that is my problem? Or are these flashers just junk? I guess if it needs a fuse I just put it on the "X" (to battery neg) lead before the flasher with a 20amp fuse? I dont understand why it would need to be fused. Anyway please let me know if you can help.

Thanks,
Rich

Rich,
you either have a problem on your car or they're junk, they should be fit and forget. As with a lot of items they can look the same but be made totally different and to different standards. As with led bulbs sometimes you get what you pay for, buy very cheap and you get very cheap but other times you pay more and still get very cheap.

I give the following information as an example.

This is from a good reliable supplier of good LED products in the UK, Classic Car LEDs, theirs mentions no need for a fuse, standard wiring as below.

12v Electronic indicator flasher / hazard relay classic car with oe click. 9.16 (exc VAT).

"Made to our own high specifications for us by a very reputable manufacturer"

In red letters - "If the relay does not behave when the engine is running you need to add suppression to the lead between your coil and distributor to reduce the RF interference".

Negative earth available.

A fuse is just to protect the wiring. Not fitting a fuse is not going to cause the flasher to fail.

It is fused, gets its power from the A4 fuse terminal which is fused.

Rich,
I had issues with the flasher unit when I replaced all my side lights including the amber front indicators.
I used the flasher bulbs form Abingdon Spares and they work just fine but the flasher unit did not. Sep 2018
I eventually got a flasher unit from https://litezupp.com/ Litezupp and Mike Sabelhaus resolved the problem and it is still working just fine. His service was second to none and I would recommend him and his equipment to anyone.

Good point about the circuit fuse I was thinking they meant additional in-line fuse for that flasher for some reason.

It's usually best to have the whole circuit with LEDs including tell-tale bulb(s) if included and the side/rear and dash bulbs if included, but the flasher unit I linked to (and presumably others if stated) are "suitable for many other classic or modern 12v cars or applications with standard filament / incandescent bulbs or LEDs or a mix of filament / incandescent bulbs and LED".

There are some excellent LED bulbs about now, still also some very poor, average and good but the better ones are even better than the equivalent of only a few years ago.

I should of mentioned the flasher never stopped working completely. The flasher still made the turn signals turn on/off. However on the first one the indicator light wouldn't flash but remained on all of the time. The second flasher worked but the indicator light wouldn't work at all. The third and last flasher installed is good, everything is working correctly. I should of been more specific.

I second Rod's recommendation of LiteZupp flashers. I manufacture and sell LED light boards for classic British cars and have nothing but good to say about their flashers. They are even small enough that, if you are talented, they can be hidden inside the original flasher can.

Good on you Lew,
(I'm a poet and didn't know it) I think it's a good trader that can also recommend other suppliers and goods, it would certainly give me confidence in what you make and sell.
