MG TD TF 1500 - Electronic ignition

Does anyone have experienced changing the points and condenser of a TD distribuitor to an electronic ignition. Moss Motors offers a Crane Cams XR-700. What about that item ?

I converted mine a few years ago. The car runs well, perhaps a bit better. The wires can be hidden fairly well, and I mounted the box inside the firewall. I recall the pick-up mounting brackets are rather cheesy and fragile looking. The directions were vague and totally non-specific- I am reasonably mechanically adept and had a time of it modifying the base place and getting all to fit. I think there is a kit out now that mounts everything inside the distributor cap (this was written about in TSO a few issues ago)- this would be better I think. No more changing gaps, burning points, fried condensers, breaking off rubbing blocks, etc. has been nice.

Its not the points wearing Lew, its the bushings in the distributor
and the
resulting wobble in timing that caused me to make this
change...engine runs
much smoother and no more wear of anything....any wobble that was
present
goes away because there is nothing touching the rotor with the
Pentronix.

Sorry I copied the wrong email.

I've run one on my 1275 powered TA for 3 or 4 years with no problems...I just put one on my Arnolt MG TD...fits right in. Simple and slick. You have to
order positive or negative ground and you cannot change your ground after installation with out burning it out...they cost about 80bucks from Skip Kelsey who is on this list. There was something about the shape of
your rotor and if the unit will fit but Skip knows all about that. Mine went in easy and the points will go back just as easy if it should fail. The nice
thing about these is that there is no external box or parts.

There's also an article in the April 1999 issue of "The Sacred Ocatagon".

Petronix is the way to go. It is easy to install and my TD runs much smoother and feels alot stronger during acceleration.

Just installed a pertronix electronic ign. in my 53 TD MK2. Starts and runs much better as I had some wobble in in my dist. Been using it almost every day now.

I am about ready to put the distributer into my engine. Where is the Petronix ignition available?
