MG TD TF 1500 - Emergency tranny ?
I finaly figured out why my driver's side floorboard sits catywampus, The weld is broke on that side of the tranny mounting bracket. Now $64 ?, can that bracket be removed and new one (rubbers too while at it) with engine and trans still in car and hooked up to drive shaft? Greg & Grimm |

G&G, You can remove the rear tranny mount with the engine and tranny in situ. It will require that you remove the tin tranny cover and unbolt the drive shaft coupling at the tranny. Unbolt the tranny to exhaust pipe bracket too. Unbolt the various rear tranny mount connections, jack up the tranny and pull the sucker out. Note the position of the rubber blocks as you can install them in two positions, but only one will fit correctly. Good luck, Ben T. |

Thanks Ben, I have floorboards out and inner rails are out because I had to get some welding done on them and had them bead blasted and painted. So right now the whole interior is out. That's how I got a look at the broken weld. Greg & Grimm |

Greg, EXTREMELY IMPORTANT - if you need to jack the rear of the gear box take great care with the radiator. You don't want the fan to touch the core or the rubber hoses to strain and crack soldered joints. If you can get to the broken weld easilly isn't it possible to MIG or TIG weld it in situ? I've used both within inches of rubber mouts without setting them on fire. Good luck Jan T |

Weld and reinforce the other old welds while the mount box is out as these all seem to break. |

The part of my transmission case is broken where the fork attaches leaving the case unattached to the support bracket. Can this be repaired by welding or brazing. It is out of the car now. Thanks |

J.Shoemaker, When I restored my TF my tranny connection was also broken and the piece was missing. I made a repair using a piece of cast iron ground to fit the broken area and then I welded it in using special cast iron welding rod. What I used is MG220 made by, believe it or not, the MG weld rod company. You should be able to find that rod or another equal at any welding supply store. The weld need to cool VERRY slowly so I wrapped it in insulation blanket until cool. So far it has held up. Have a good day! John |

In Horst Schact's TD restoration book there is another method to fix. He drills the casting "wings" at a 90 degree angle to the original pin, fits a rod through the holes, and then the clevis slips over the rod with the pin on top. Book is at the office, but that is what I remember. |

Well I got everything removed with little problem. Didn't have to raise trany that much. However what a mess this is. The support bracket had been fixed before and three corners are broken to different degrees. The repair looks more like it was braised, as opposed to welding, the weldment is a bronze color and rather sloppy done I'd say. Also there was no rubber under the fork and the fork is very heavily worn with deep ridges as is the clevis pin. Cotter pin was so short I couldn't grab it so I did the super punch/heavy hammer thing and just sheared it right off sheard like butter. Now to drive shaft. I know what a punch mark looks like when marking two flanges to be able to go back right way round. And I was right the two marks line up perfect now, but DPO had them rotated out of whack. Also I don't think it was a good idea for the DPO to use three differnt size/length bolts on the flange. Needless to say I will be making all these things go the right way round with new parts and same size/length bolts nuts and proper rubbers. All this just because I wanted to have the tank cleaned and sealed. Greg & Grimm |

I'm wondering if we should establish a DPO thread and keep it alive seeing if every single part of our cars can eventually be featured at least once. MINE had the entire Hood/Bonnet handle set transposed so that the long pointy end rotated INTO the wing when going from open/closed AND he had the attachment brackets of the Top Frame rotated 180 degrees making the top impossible to put up properly. That's just two. John |

Well I got everything all back to right around. Was very interesting figuring out a proper sequence. It was not a piece of cake. The bellhousing hits the firewall opening before the fan ever gets near the rad. Greg & Grimm |
