MG TD TF 1500 - Engine number TF
Where do I find the number of the engine for a MG midget TF 1250. Is it to be seen on the engine itself ? Near the spare-box glove is a plate with the car and enginenumber, but how to check that this number match the engine |

JM - The engine number is on the right front crankcase just below the front carburetor, right at the spot that you can't see on a TF without a mirror and a good light. I am sending you a picture of the engine number tag so you will know what you are looking for. Good luck - Dave |

JM, I would only add to David's excellent information, that if the engine tag is missing, you can find the number stamped in the block above the location of the tag (may be filled with grime, you might have to clean the spot). However, with heads, sumps and flywheels swapped about over the years, the engine number is just one thing you need to verify if you are working on the engine and clutch. warmly, dave |

Thanks David, I found the engine number tag and the number is matching, nice to get your pictures so in that way it was easy to find. |

Hello Dave, I have a question on restoration MG TD / TF, was it your site with so many pictures on the internet to restore a red MG TD. I could not find this site anymore, if so please could you tell me where I can find it, it gives a lot of information which I can use for my TF that I bought a month ago best regards Jan Bierling |

Hello Jan I sent you the new link for the site to your email address. The site developed a problem, and I had to change it. warmly, dave |

There is a problem .... The brass engine tags are available separately. For instance Moss show it as part #408-770. Any engine number you find on a brass ID tag may not necessarily be the original or even, the correct, engine. Rebuilds by authorised MOWOG shops almost always put on new tags. Early XPAG blocks however, had the number stamped into the casting, thus avoiding the problem. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

It is useally not difficult for an expert to see the difference between a genuine and a replika enginenumber or garuanteeplate. The stamped numbers are useally made with too modern graphs and too sharp as well. Just compare to a known genuine one will reveal the truth if there is a fake. |
