MG TD TF 1500 - Engine Oil Grade Oil Splashing
I recently removed the breather pipe from the rocker cover and ran the engine with the bonnet down. When I lifted the bonnet the underside was covered in oil which had splashed from the pipe stub in the rocker cover. I cleaned the holes in the bottom of the baffel that covers the stub on the inside of the rocker thinking this would stop the splash but it hasn't. A friend has an aluminium rocker cover on his TF with no breather so I have simply blocked mine to prevent oil leaking into the air cleaner. However I am using semi synthetic oil. Is it possible this is too thin? I must add the cylinder head is in good condition and the oil is splashing rather than misting. Cheers Jan T |

There is more than one reason why you shouldn't be using semi synthetic oil. Yes it may well be too thin. Also it will be too low on ZDDP and finally it probalbly has a lot of detergent, which it is usually better to avoid. I don't see a particular issue with closing the vent on the rocker cover as it is still vented via the push rod tubes to the crankcase, which has a breather. I have an alloy rocker cover and vent it to one of the air filters, with no splash issues, though the vent is taken from the top at the front. Dave H |
