MG TD TF 1500 - Exhaust manifold coatings
Has anyone had any experience with the metallic-ceramic coating marketed by Jet-Hot? Does it hold up? Does it discolor or stain? They claim it will lower the temperature in the engine compartment. If this is true, it should keep the carburetors cooler. Did you notice any difference? What color did you choose? I think originally they were aluminized with a whitish color. Any other comments? Thank you. Ric |

I had a company spray alluminium onto my manifold. This was the original process used. The correct appearance is white (not metallic)and it looks perfect. There is no discolouration due to heat. Jeremy, Sydney Australia |

Jeremy is correct; the original finish was sprayed aluminium. That being said, I'd prefer Jet Hot--if it can be safely applied to a cast iron exhaust manifold. I've had very good results with the product on tubular headers (not on a T-series). Although I didn't test with a thermometer, I do think underhood temperature was reduced. On my TD I wrapped the head pipe with ceramic fiber tape, and I know the quantity of head pouring through the firewall, toeboard and floorboard was reduced. I was going to use the tape on the manifold also, but the manufacturer said that its use on cast iron could cause warping and craking--too much heat is held in the manifold. I don't know if Jet Hot has the same problem on cast iron. I had my manifold aluminized, and I find the somewhat rough surface hard to clean. Eventually it oxidizes and turns from silvery to white. I like the silvery, smooth look of Jet Hot -- but absolute originality is not my first priority. |

Ric, I've been considering the same process for my manifold this winter. I have a vender that powdercoats for me and he also does all types of metallizing, including this aluminum and silicon spray that you described. He does it quite often on motorcycle mufflers. I've actually seen it applied to T series manifolds and it can be polished after application...Origional or not, it looks quite outstanding! I suspect that this is what our manifolds looked like for a very short time when new! I'm curious if you have been given any idea as to cost. We should compare notes. I remember that he did a buddies Honda motorcycle muffler and pipe for around $100. Let me know what you decide. |

The Eastwood Company (www.eastwoodco.com) offers several high-temp coatings for use on manifolds from cast iron to stainless and in a variety of colors. Prices are about $20 for a can. I haven't tried them, but will probably give them a try. Larry |
