MG TD TF 1500 - Felt insert under windscreen stanchion
Rob Grantham mentioned in a previous thread that restorers often leave out a felt insert in this area. Can Rob or anyone else provide more information on this - size, location etc, as I haven’t seen this listed on any of the drawings or photos to date. We are ready to paint and fit the cowling on our TF, and I don’t want to miss anything important. |

This is what I found under the scuttle after disassembly. Felt on the metal support tab for the mirror. I did not find felt under the windscreen stanchion on mine.
This is only one car which is an early TF. Perhaps restorers who've dismantled numerous car have found other evidence and assembly methods changed as car production advanced on. I am curious to hear what Rob has to say and add. I'm always interested in the production methods of these cars and input and research from others who've restored T series. Frank TF1414 |

Though all my restorations and most of my knowledge is in relation to TDs I’ll concur with Franks assessment. The only felt packing I’ve encountered under the scuttle has been the padding on the center strip Bill Chasser TD-4834 |

That all makes sense. I had the impression that Rob was referring to the relieved area of the wood frame on each side at the forward end. |

I HAVE seen felt used here on Original TCs, but not on TDs and TFs. Be well, David |

John,
The few TFs I had seen in the seventies, did have the felt in place albeit in very tatted form ! An mgtf associate here in Perth who had an untouched TF also found the felt in place after he lifted out the scuttle. The felt has good effects in helping to prevent the scuttle being distorted on stanchion bolt tensioning however it also may partly explain the dreaded rust in this area of the scuttle !! From memory I placed the felt around an inch above the top edge of the front quarter panel and ran it along the length of the wood scuttle/windscreen support rail. Of course three(3) holes were punched through the felt to accommodate the chrome stanchion bolts. I gather you have already 'mock'fitted up the windscreen to the body tub before painting. Check the gap between the scuttle edge and the front quarter panel and also note if the scuttle panel depresses overly inward. Cheers Rob Grantham |

Many thanks Rob, I will check the panel fit and try a strip of felt there. Very interesting, as I'm fairly sure there is a gap towards the font edge. Cheers' John. |

John, A pleasure to assist a fellow TFer ! MY son and I have just finished the put back of all newly painted body panels on our totally rebuilt red with biscuit trim interior.TF1500(1955). This is my last restoration. Quite pleased with the results so far. Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

I know that my 50 TD (4139) has felt between the wood that the mirror goes through and the Skuttle metal. |
