MG TD TF 1500 - Fender/Running Board Piping

The Moss catalog shows $41.95 for 9 yards if piping. Is this something that can be made up at local trim shops or is it better to get from Moss? Also, what size(s) is it?

If your car is one of the standard colors the moss stuff works great. If not you will have to have it made up. It's about 3/4" in diameter.

The front splash is 1/4 assuming you are talking about a td. On tf's the front of the engine side panels is small a diameter too.

I made my own up and it is 3/8" in diameter for the wings and running boards. The 1/4" is used for the valance. I purchased plastic tubing from our local hardware store . It is air supply lines as used in aquariums. The you have to cut off one side of the feeder foot on your sewing machine, this allows you to get the stitches in close to the piping. If the foot is used as standard the fit of the tube will be very sloppy. Realise that you have to have material long enough to make your longest run. This is where the costs come in for the homemade stuff. If you are going to use a canvas material please use plenty of scotch-guard before installation,.This helps keep the wax from staining the welting.Hope you have good luck with your project. It is worth it in the end.

Check out the mgtf web page pictures, item 10 and you will see pictures and details of the diameters, 3/8" and 1/4".

I can't believe I typed 3/4 of an inch. Brain skip I guess. Yes the size for the regular piping is 3/8".

I am still in trouble from putting parts in the dishwasher prior to final engine assembly. If I start chopping bits off the sewing machine it could be the end. All kidding aside, they do sell a piping foot which is just that. It is probably easier and cheaper just to make your own. Upholstery shops also sell the "pipe" in the desired thickness. It is pretty cheap (maybe even less than the aquarium air line).

Chris,

You made my day and then destroyed it.

3/4" piping would just about cover the gap between my rear wings and the rear quarter panels.

Cheers
