MG TD TF 1500 - Fire Extiinguisher for a TF

I have always carried a fire extinguisher in my TF but normally just let it roll about on the rear shelf. A friend with a TD has fitted one to the rear of the bench seat. This isn't possible with the TFs' bucket seats. Has anyone got suggestions where I could fit the bracket?

Jan, in my T types and MGB racer I fitted them in front of the driver's seat under your legs. Handy to reach if needed in a hurry.

Just tried the extinguisher and bracket and it fits perfectly in front of the seat.

I plan on mounting the bracket to a piece of Aluminium flat metal that is held in place by passenger seat mounting bolts.

Easy to reach down there, fits perfectly.

I mentioned my friend with his TD. He has just had a terrible experience with his car and is probably too upset to place a message at the moment. His TD burst into flames and whilst he was able to extinguish the fire pretty quickly it has charred the bonnet and the extinguisher has made a real mess. The interesting thing is the reason for the fire. The thick wire from the horns to the switch, which earths, has rubbed on the much thinner earth wire to the fuel pump. The two wires had connected and the horns started blaring, earthing via the thin wire from the pump. This wire was too thin to take the horn current, overheated and set on fire!

Jan sorry to hear about your friend’s TD. :(. I recently had a similar occurrence with one of my horns shorting out. Burnt the horn to a crisp before the the fuse finally blew. Luckily no damage to the car except for the horn but I now show a hot earth in the horn circuit that I have to investigate further. You’ve given me a place to look at more closely as begin that frustrating task. I use to carry dry chem extinguishers in all my cars but have switched to Halon systems instead which I think is only an inert gas that will leave no clean up residue beyond any charred remains. Yes it’s more expensive initially but ...

Just spoken to my friend with the TD and he has spoken to an expert on fire extinguishers. He says extinguishers should be positioned vertically. The instructions on my powder extinguisher say it should be vertical when in use but there is no mention of the fixture to the car. Can anyone comment please.

Just a wee finishing comment - also fit a easy to reach battery shut off switch.

They're fine laying flat and I 100% agree with Don it should be in front of the drivers seat in easy reach - you want it in a hurry when it's needed and diving over the other side looking for it is wasting time specially in the worst case that you are pinned in there unable to move----
Also--at least once a year get the thing out of it's bracket and give it a good shake up-
There have been cases where the powder has compacted down from long term vibration specially in track cars and when the extinguisher is needed it's effectiveness is compromised by the packed down powder
Also--make sure you have a metal bracket,strap and clip
The plastic ones are ok for home or in the shed but METAL for the car--If you crash the last thing you need is a 1Kg slug of fire extinguisher flying round your precious space
When I scrutineer at speed events here it's always extinguisher out ,shake it up, make sure the metal bracket is bolted in with flat washers under the heads of the bolts and nuts, no self tappers allowed then refit checking the clip clips over properly and that it can be reached from the drivers position with your belts on-------nothing else will do

Today I telephoned the manufacturer of the dry powder extinguisher that I have in the car.
I spoke to one of their technical people who said the extinguisher is best mounted as near vertical as possible.
This is why they are usually supplied with a mounting bracket.

Even though I said that I mounted the extinguisher, I never got around to doing so. I'll mount it as described when I finish the restoration.

I am going to use the seat mounting bolts to attach a piece of flat stock on top of the carpet, then mount the extinguisher bracket to it.

That way it would be under the passengers legs, it has been sitting there loos for 2 years.

Some of you may not like this, but it is in the verticle position and requires no bracket.
It does apply to the TF, and I keep it in the pocket formed by the Passenger seat and the outside wall of the tub. The passenger seat is further forward than my drivers seat.

Mine is now in front of the passenger seat, attached to a piece of aluminium secured by the seat mounting bolts. I have been out in the car with my wife as passenger and access is no problem. I will remove the extinguisher every now and then and give it a good shake to prevent the powder compacting.

Agreed, some flat stock attached to the seat mountings is a good solution. Prefer steel for strength.
