MG TD TF 1500 - fuel consumption

Hi guys just wondering what sort of fuel consumption is considered normal for the Td 1500.
mine seems great but the handbook says it should only get 28 mpg.. hope mines not too lean as its running great

You don't say what kind of milage you are getting, Hayden. But I always figured those figures were Imperial Gallons, which are 1.2 US gallons.

That means that the 28 mpg figure would be 23 mpg here in the US, which is pretty much what they get, although 25 isn't unheard of. That would be 30 mpg Imperial.

My TF 1250 with a 4.3:1 rear axle is averaging 24.8 statute miles per imperial gallon. If anything the carbs are set slightly lean.

The best I once obtained with my TF 1250 (with standard 4.875 diff) was 45mpg going from Palmerston (South) via Picton, to Samson, approx 515 miles at under 50mph, on one tank full. I normally get 33mpg on the open road at 55-60 but drops to 29mpg at 60-65.

Condition of the carbs is critical. Once mine were re-built, I noticed a significant drop in consumption.

Also, with a pertronix ignition system, I have been able to add a little advance.

... all contributes to better fuel effeciency.

On our trip last year up the Shannondoah Valley (1125 miles round trip) at 50 to 65 mph (back roads or expressways) in my TF 1500, I averaged overall 31.2 miles per US gallon. I have a XPEG engine, stage 2 tuned, 9.5 Compression ratio, and a 4.1 rear end.
(about 83 hp at max rpm) Using US 93 Octane (unleaded) gas.
This drive included several mountain road passages.

Well mine seems to average abour 32 mph but on a trip the other day i got 36mpg as i was just cruising about 55-60 mph. im using 97 octain in it and its not US galls... so seems fine i thought i might be running a bit lean but not now ...thanks guys

On my 1700+ mile trip in '04 I averaged 25.22 mpg. Most of that was while cruising at 60-65 on Interstates. Plain old regular gas with a 4.3 rear end in my TD.

Hi Guys, if you have an altered diff ratio then how do you know what mileage you have travelled?

You either need to consult a map or make some corrections to the odometer.

I drove to Melbourne some time ago in the TD with a 4.55 diff. The correct distance is around 1000 miles.
The odometer read just over 900 miles as I was coming into Melbourne. So the difference is close to 10%.

I always need to make this calculation when we are doing Nav runs with the Club or I would get even more lost.

Cheers,

Paul.

I determined the odometer correction by noting the mile markers vs odometer reading for a distance of 130 miles.
This covers the tire size, speedometer gearing, and rear end ratio changes.
