MG TD TF 1500 - Fuel Hose & Pipe to Pump - Early TF

Looking for suggestions to keep the bonnet from contacting the inlet and outlet lines on an early TF fuel pump.

My wife's TF681, an early TF, has the fuel pump mounted on the toolbox. One edge of the cross brace under the bonnet touches the fitting on the fuel line that runs from the pump to the rear carb.

The bonnet also touches the inlet fuel line at the pump.

The bonnet presses tightly enough at the two locations to tear a piece of paper when I close the bonnet and try to pull it from the joint.

The bonnet sits correctly. The top of the bonnet fits flush with the cowl and with the radiator. The radiator is positioned correctly ... the hand crank is aligned with the crank pully.

> Top photo:
Orientation of the pump and mount on the toolbox.

> Bottom photo:
YELLOW arrows show where the bonnet hits the fuel line to the rear carb. Note paint worn from the bonnet brace. Fuel line is disconnected. It appears that the only way to avoid contact is to run the line between the sides of the bonnet brace, parallel to the firewall toward the hot terminal of the battery - which is asking for disaster. Or to run it toward the side panel, which will require a custom-made longer fuel line.

BLUE arrow shows where the bonnet hits the copper inlet pipe. The rubber hose replaced a fuel filter, installed by a previous owner, that is in the first photo. Some judicious bending and repositioning of the copper line at the pump may eliminate this problem(?)

Thanks for any help that you can give to me.

Is there enough slack in the iso-mount/toolbox holes to drop the pump slightly.
If the tub has ever been off the chassis the relative position between the bulkhead and tub may have changed.
Every time I have had the body off, something changes. Even putting it back on the same packing pieces has changed the door fit needing adjusting.

Agree with Ray. Your pump looks fairly high, the top fitting is usually about level with the top of the toolbox. Maybe the insulator block and bracket can be loosened off and retightened with the pump as low as it'll go----Also in the attached pic the hoses are swivelled around to the rear which would help as well if you've got enough length in them to do it.--and notice the height the pump is mounted/sitting.

If you look for "The Original MG TF Gallery"
There are pictures of TF1414, the pump appears lower and the pipes out sideways as William says.

Also, lose the inline filter. Should that become blocked, you'll likely burn out the pump. Never put an inline filter ahead of the pump.

Lonnie- I agree that the top of the pump, with the fuel line fitting, is flush with the top of the toolbox. I also agree that with a longer fuel line from the pump it would allow the line to sit slightly lower thus giving more clearance. On myTF you can see approximately where the top of the pump fuel line is in relation to the toolbox top. It doesn't show too well in the photo but the bottom of the fuel mounting bracket is at about the bottom level of the toolbox. Is your pump an SU? I could not tell from the photo except that it looks a little different from mine, which is original (though rebuilt). Might your pump be a little larger than original?
The frame from the bonnet on my car also has some marks where it rubbed against the corner of the toolbox. I have a piece of rubber, like on a divers wetsuit, that I lay on the toolbox to keep things neat and clean. I hide the rubber when I show the car.

My TF built 1954 has the fuel pimp mounted in the rear above the rear axle so there is no problem of fouling the hood. Perhaps LHD cars had the pump mounted under the bonnet like the TD. The TF fuel pump is not the same as the pump on the TD.
Even on our TD the fuel pumps cleared the bonnet. We had 2 pumps to ensure that enough fuel got to the engine. The car was fitted with a supercharger and even without the blower it goes like hell!

SUCCESS

My fuel lines no longer touch the bonnet. The photos of Frank Cronin's beautiful TF1414 showed me how to run the fuel line from the toolbox mounted pump to the rear carb.

I trimmed the rubber pad behind the pump with the hope to let the pump sit a little lower. Don't know if it worked.

I rotated the fitting on the fuel pump that connects to the braided flex line on the rear carb to point outward. The fuel line now runs between the channel on the bonnet.

I also turned the input pipe to face outward to avoid touching the new route of the flex line to the carb, and to avoid contact with the bonnet and latch, plus it looks uniform with the input line.

A previous owner had cut the copper line from the tank to the pump to install a fuel filter. I removed the filter and replaced with a piece of rubber fuel line when I bought the car. I used a scrap piece of steel fuel line with a bend and two short pieces of rubber fuel line to fit the new route to the pump. Someday, I'll replace the copper / steel / rubber section of with copper.

Modified the path of the battery cable to the starter switch to enter the switch from the bottom to stay clear of fuel lines.

FWIW, I used two Abingdon Spares "Rubber Terminal Boots, heavy duty", 37-054A on the starter switch. They are larger than the ones that I have used for years that usually split after a couple of months. Don't think that these will split.

I believe that the TF bonnet sits closer to the fuel pump and to the engine than the TD bonnet. Routing is more critical.

Thanks for your help and advice.
